RALEIGH, NC - The IUP softball team responded to a season-opening loss in game one with a thrilling 11-10 win in 11 innings over Glenville State in the afternoon to split their first day of the 2013 season Friday in North Carolina.

Mount Olive 2, IUP 1

The Crimson Hawks would put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning but weren't able to bring anyone around in the season-opening loss to Mount Olive.

The Trojans scored their only two runs in the first inning, getting a pair across with a hit and the help of an error and a wild pitch. IUP starter Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) calmed down after that, tossing six shutout innings with five strikeouts.

IUP scored its lone run in the sixth on a Jen Beaver (Chester Springs/Owen J. Roberts) single to left, bringing Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) in from third.

IUP 11, Glenville State 10 (11 Innings)

Trailing by a run heading into the bottom of the 11th inning, Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) and Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) scored a pair of unearned runs to send the Crimson Hawks into the win column for the first time in 2013 in walkoff fashion.

IUP posted a four run second inning thanks to a Ward double that plated a pair of runs, but Glenville State would respond with four runs of its own in the top of the third to regain the lead.

The Crimson Hawks would rally from a two run deficit in the 7th to tie it at 7-7 before trading runs in the 9th and 10th innings on RBI doubles from Beaver and Kaylee Prendergast (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy).

Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) got the start in the circle for IUP in game two and allowed just two earned runs in four innings, while Campbell tossed seven innings in relief and got the win.

IUP is back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon for a pair of games against Shepherd and West Liberty. Game time with Shepherd is set for 2:00 p.m., while first pitch with the Hilltoppers is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
