SALEM, VA – Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) hit her second three-run homerun in as many days helping IUP to an opening game win as the Crimson Hawks split their Saturday games at the Atlantic Region Challenge. IUP defeated Charleston (WV) 4-3 before falling to West Virginia State 6-1.

Mitchell finished the first game 2-2 with a walk and that three-run homer. Ashley Strack (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) accounted for the other run with a solo shot of her own.

All of those runs came in the fourth inning for the Crimson Hawks, as Strack led off with her round tripper to make it 1-0. Kaylee Prendergast (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) followed with a single and advanced to second on a Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) walk before Mitchell cleared the bases with her homer.

Charleston made it 4-1 on a single and an error in the sixth and then made it a one-run game with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh. Starting pitcher Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) closed out the game for IUP, getting Charleston into a pair of ground ball outs to end the threat and secure the win.

She improves to 3-1 on the year with the complete game win, scattering seven hits with a strikeout and a walk.

In game two, West Virginia State jumped out to an early 5-0 run after two innings. IUP got a run back in the third, as Mitchell brought Prendergast around from second with an RBI single.

Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) threw a complete game in the circle for the Crimson Hawks, striking out one and walking two.

IUP wraps up its weekend in Virginia on Sunday morning with games against Fairmont State and UMass Lowell.
