MILLERSVILLE, PA - Not a single earned run was allowed by hurlers
Stephen Cooke (Severn, MD/Archbishop Curley) or
Kyle Zambanini (Jerome/Conemaugh Twp.) as the IUP baseball team swept a pair of games with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East rival Millersville Friday.
Cooke was magnificent for the Crimson Hawks (10-6) in game one, outdueling Millersville starter Tim Mayza in a 1-0 IUP win. Cooke allowed just four hits and struck out eight in the complete game shutout, while Mayza's only blemish came on an RBI single from
Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) in the top of the seventh.
The one run lead would be more than enough for Cooke, who slammed the door in the bottom of the frame to notch his fourth win of the young season. IUP mustered just six hits as team, but found the scoreboard in the seventh after
Tyler Mroz (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) led off the inning with a single to center.
After an
Austin Mock (State College/State College) walk put runners on first and second with two outs, Zinsmeister roped a single to left to score the eventual game-winning run. Zinsmeister finished 1-for-4 with the lone RBI, while Mock and
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) each went 1-for-2 with a walk.
Not to be outdone on the bump was Zambanini, who also scattered just four hits and allowed one unearned run in a complete game victory. The junior fanned five batters in seven innings of work and improved his season record to a sterling 4-0. Without a walk on his line Friday, Zambanini has now thrown 26.1 consecutive innings without a walk dating back to opening weekend against Concord.
The Marauders (13-7) plated their only run of the day in the bottom of the second on a David Pine RBI single, but the lead would only stand until the top of the fifth, when the Crimson Hawks posted four runs to take a commanding three-run lead.
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) got the scoring started for IUP with a single that scored a pair of runs, while Lupia and
Troy Foster (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) also knocked in runs during the rally. Foster would bring home another run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh, and Zambanini would retire the bottom half of the frame in order to lock up the win.
Foster went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI in game two, while Uhl finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs batted in. Tad Barton took the loss for Millersville, surrendering three earned runs in five innings of work.
The two teams will wrap up a four game set with a twinbill tomorrow afternoon from Marauder Park. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m., while first pitch in game two is slated for 3:30 p.m.
