No. 44 Women’s Tennis Runs Streak to Five with Victory over Wayne State

Erika Schnaas took it to the wire to clinch the IUP victory with a three-set win at numberfive.

AKRON, OH – A three-set win by Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) was the clincher as the 44th-ranked IUP women's tennis team defeated Wayne State 6-3 in a non-conference matchup at the Tow Path Tennis Club in Akron.

The neutral site win was the fifth straight victory for the Crimson Hawks as they improve to 8-6 on the season. Wayne State falls to 18-6.

The clinching win came at the fifth singles spot as Schnaas rallied to defeat Manu Materak 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

The Crimson Hawks held a 2-1 lead after doubles play but the Warriors tied it up in the first singles match as Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) fell to Yahsha Moore 6-4, 6-1 at number one. Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) put IUP back on top with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at number six over Jessica Kruczek and took a 4-2 lead when Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) defeated Julia Kamenko 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at number two.

Wayne State took the fourth singles spot when Anne Li Brand beat Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 before Schnaas held off the Warriors with the clinching win.

Another match going down to the wire at the same time was at number three, as Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) defeated Alex Poissant 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4.

In doubles play, Timko and Osborne picked up a win at number two, defeating Kamenko and Poissant 8-4 while McCormick and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) beat Materak and Kruczek 8-6 at number three. Moore and Li Brand defeated Eaton and Schnaas 8-5 at number one.

The Crimson Hawks face another tough opponent in Grand Valley State on Friday morning.
