Women’s Tennis Falls to California in the PSAC Championship

INDIANA, PA – The Crimson Hawks run in the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Tennis Championship came to an end on Sunday with a 5-0 loss to California in the title match at the Maple Street Courts.

The appearance in the championship match was the third consecutive for IUP, falling to the dominant Vulcans each season.

The victory marked the seventh consecutive PSAC championship for California and eighth overall.

The win was clinched at number one singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Lucie Sipkova over Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge). For her efforts all weekend, Sipkova was named the MVP of the championships.

The Vulcans picked up their first victory at the first doubles position as Sipkova and Lucie Rey defeated Eaton and Schnaas 8-0.

The Crimson Hawks gave the Vulcans a run for their money at the two and three spots, holding leads before eventually falling in both spots. Ramona Czakon and Alexandra Borgenhoff had to rally to defeat Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) and Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) 8-5 at two and Jade Pondicas and Maxime Colen held off a surge from Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) for an 8-4 win at three.

California took a 4-0 lead in singles play when Rey defeated Osborne 6-0, 6-0 at number four.

Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) held a 7-5, 1-0 lead over Colen at number six when the match was called. Schnaas had rallied from a 6-0 defeat in the first set and held a 4-3 lead over Pondicas at number five. Timko trailed Czakon 7-5, 1-0 at two and McCormick was down 6-4, 2-1 to Borgenhoff at three.

The Crimson Hawks, 17-7 overall on the season, will now await word from the NCAA on their placement in the 2013 Division II Championships. Currently ranked second in the Atlantic Region, IUP could be one of two hosts for next weekend's regional championships.
