ERIE, PA – Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) smashed two homeruns and had seven RBI to help lead an IUP offensive explosion as the Crimson Hawks swept Mercyhurst with scores of 14-1 and 8-5 on Sunday afternoon.

Mitchell finished the day 7-for-8 at the plate and scored five runs for the Crimson Hawks, who finish the season with a 26-15 overall record. Mercyhurst wraps up its season with a 20-28 mark.

The Crimson Hawks finished with 27 hits in the doubleheader sweep. Stef McCoy and Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) each collected four hits on the day as nine different players recorded a hit on the day for IUP.

Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) picked up a win and a save on the day, going five innings in game one with six strikeouts and just three hits while giving up one earned run in one inning in the nightcap.

The Crimson Hawks scored early and often in the opener, starting with three runs on three hits in the first inning. Mitchell got things going with an RBI double, followed by an Ashley Strack (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) walk that forced a run in and a Kaylee Prendergast (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) run-scoring single to right.

Four more runs came in the second, including a solo shot by Mauk followed by RBI singles by Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) and Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East).

The third inning featured back-to-back homeruns from Mitchell and Stef Poates (Yorktown, VA/Grafton), making it a 9-0 IUP lead before Mercyhurst got on the board with a run in the bottom half. IUP increased its lead in the fourth with five more runs on four hits, including an RBI single from Poates and a run-scoring double off the bat of Ashley Strack (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop). The game ended with the eight-run rule after five innings.

It was a tighter game in the nightcap, with Mercyhurst holding a 1-0 lead heading to the third. A Mitchell RBI single in that inning tied the score before IUP took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when McCoy scored on a wild pitch.

The Crimson Hawks extended their lead in the fifth with a three-run homer off the bat of Mitchell.

Mercyhurst countered with three runs in the bottom half to tie the score at 5-5. Three runs in the sixth, including a two-run single from McCoy gave the Crimson Hawks an 8-5 lead. Senn came on in the seventh, allowing a run before getting the Lakers to groundout, ending the threat with two runners on.

The Crimson Hawks end their season with that 26-15 overall mark and a 7-9 record in the PSAC Central.
