Women’s Tennis Prepped for NCAA Championships

INDIANA, PA – The Crimson Hawks have advanced to the final 16 teams for the third consecutive season and will compete in the 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships in Surprise, Ariz. this week, starting with an opening round matchup against Southwest Baptist on Wednesday.

IUP advanced as the second seed in the Atlantic Region after defeating West Virginia State 5-0 on April 29. Southwest Baptist, out of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), heads to Arizona as the number one seed in the Central Region.

The Crimson Hawks come in with an overall record of 19-7, including their third consecutive appearance in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship match. Their season included a 14-match winning streak and 11 shutouts.

Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) is featured as IUP's number one singles player, going 23-13 overall on the year. The regional senior player of the year earned All-PSAC West honors in both singles and doubles, also going 23-13 paired with Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) at the number one spot this season.

Another PSAC West honoree, Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) lines up at the number two singles spot. She went 23-9 in singles play this year, including 14-2 in dual matches. She'll team with Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) at the number two doubles spot as the pair went 27-9 together this year.

Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) will go at number three for IUP after putting together a 20-12 record this year. She'll team with Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) at number three doubles, a pairing that went 22-8 on the season.

Osborne is slotted at fourth singles for the Crimson Hawks, going 20-13 overall on the season. Schnaas lines up at number five with a 22-11 singles record while Ranvita Matho rounds up the lineup at six with a 23-5 overall mark.

Southwest Baptist enters with a 22-1 overall record, winning the MIAA championship.

The winner will advance to the quarterfinals to play either Hawaii Pacific or NYIT on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
