Big Second Half Leads Field Hockey to Victory Over No. 9 Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, PA – Down 2-0 after the first half, Kate Bruce (Clarks Summit/Lackawanna Trail) opened up the scoring for IUP and led the field hockey team to a 4-2 victory over No. 9 Kutztown.

Five minutes into the second half, Bruce netted her first goal of the game. She followed that up 11 minutes later, scoring another and tying the game at 2-2.

Freshman Kendra Blantz (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) would give the Crimson Hawks the lead, putting one past Kutztown goalie Kayla Denlinger at the 57:42 minute mark.

Ericka Griffith (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) closed out the scoring for IUP, sealing the 4-2 victory at the 69:01 minute mark on a goal assisted by Dani Edwards (Milford/Delaware Valley).

The Crimson Hawks pressured Kutztown the entire game, outshooting the Golden Bears 29-10 and forcing Denlinger to make 16 saves. For IUP, goalie Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ) made five saves, all coming in the first half. Kutztown only managed to get off one shot in the second half of play, as the Crimson Hawks defense was strong.

IUP will return home Wednesday to host 10th-ranked Slippery Rock in a 7 p.m. game at George P. Miller Stadium. The Crimson Hawks last faced off against The Rock in the PSAC Tournament quarterfinals, defeating them 1-0.
