No. 15 Crimson Hawks Hold off Edinboro’s Comeback Attempt to Earn Hard Fought Win

EDINBORO, PA – IUP ended the game on a 14-7 run as the 15th-ranked Crimson Hawks held off Edinboro in a 69-66 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West men's basketball thriller on Wednesday night.

Down 59-55 with 3:17 remaining, the Crimson Hawks got a three-pointer by Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) to jumpstart the run. Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) scored IUP's next five points to make it a 63-61 lead and then the Crimson Hawks knocked down six straight free throws in the final minute of play to take an eight-point lead with just 13 seconds to go.

Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School), Chance and Keita each hit two free throws apiece and the Crimson Hawks forced the Fighting Scots into four missed shots and one turnover over a 1:11 span as IUP widened its lead.

Late threes by Edinboro weren't enough as the Crimson Hawks held on for the three-point victory.

Kieta scored a game-high 28 points, including 16 in the second half, to pace the Crimson Hawks. He shot 10-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the free throw line and added eight rebounds and four assists in 36 minutes.

Chance was the only other IUP player to reach double-figures in scoring, adding 14 with six rebounds and two assists.

The Crimson Hawks improve to 15-2 overall with the win and 5-2 in the PSAC West. Edinboro drops to 7-10 and 0-7.

IUP grabbed an early 9-2 lead and was up 17-10 midway through the first half before a 9-2 run by the Fighting Scots tied the game at 19-19 with 5:56 to go before the break. The game was tied again at 22-22 until the Crimson Hawks scored 10 of the next 12 points to head into halftime up by eight.

The Fighting Scots started the second half on a 21-8 run to take a 45-40 lead with 13:25 to go. A jumper by Keita tied the game at 47-47 while a layup less than two minutes later gave IUP a 51-47 lead. Edinboro then scored 12 of the next 16 points to grab that 59-55 lead.

Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) had a team-high nine rebounds and Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) added three blocks.

This sets up a big Saturday for the Crimson Hawks as they welcome rival Slippery Rock to the KCAC. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
