Late Rally Leads No. 6 Men’s Basketball to 12th Straight Victory

LOCK HAVEN, PA – Trailing heading into halftime for the first time all season, the nation's sixth-ranked team mounted a second half comeback to defeat Lock Haven 70-64.

The Crimson Hawks scored 46 points in the second half, compared to just 24 in the first, led by Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) who finished the game with 26 points, 19 of which he scored in the second.

In a game that saw six lead changes and three ties, Lock Haven was able to stick with the Crimson Hawks early on.

IUP was unable to connect on its shots in the first, shooting just 27.6 percent from the floor, sinking only eight field goals. Lock Haven got up by as much as six points early on, and headed into the break with the two-point advantage.

The Bald Eagles continued to roll to start off the second half, taking a 10 point advantage at the 14:24 minute mark. Following a timeout, the Crimson Hawks responded, going on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to three.

The two teams would exchange baskets but IUP was able to regain control and take back the lead with just under 10 minutes to play when Souberbielle sunk one of his four three-pointers on the afternoon.

IUP went on to connect on three straight three pointers, two from Souberbielle and one from Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) to get up by five and begin to pull away.

A free throw from Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) with just over four minutes to go gave IUP a 10-point lead, its biggest of the afternoon. Both teams swapped baskets but the Crimson Hawks' defense kept the Bald Eagles at a comfortable distance and gave the team its PSAC West leading 12th victory of the season.

The Crimson Hawks were stellar in the second half, shooting 60.9 percent from the floor and 63.6 percent from behind the arc.

Souberbielle finished the game with 26 points in addition to nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. The senior is just 57 points away from 1,000 on his career.

Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) was the only other Crimson Hawk to record double digit scoring numbers, finishing with 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) finished with seven points, six rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal and Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School) added seven points and three rebounds.

Cottrell got his second straight start, in for Jeffers, finishing with five points, seven rebounds and one block .

The Bald Eagles outshot IUP in the game, connecting on 42.9 percent of their shots, compared to 42.3 from the Crimson Hawks. IUP was on fire from behind the arc, making nine threes and shooting 47.4 percent, compared to just 33.3 percent for Lock Haven.

The Crimson Hawks will return home Wednesday, hosting Bloomsburg in their final non-conference action of the regular season. The Huskies sit in a tie for first place in the East at 8-4, 4-0. They're averaging 70.6 points per game, giving up just 65.3.
