No. 11 IUP Soars to Fourth Straight Win, Dominating Clarion 82-61

INDIANA, PA – Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) picked up right where he left off, leading the Crimson Hawks to a dominant 82-61 victory over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West play Saturday night at the Kovalchick Complex.

Norfleet finished the game with 20 points, his second straight 20+ point game. Four Crimson Hawks ended the game in double figures, with the team shooting a season-high 56.4 percent from the floor.

The nation's 11th-ranked team was hot from the start, getting out to a 14-point lead halfway through the period. The Crimson Hawks went on a 17-0 run to get up by 20 with 8:34 to go. The team held Clarion off the scoresheet for nearly six minutes.

IUP kept the pressure on for the rest of the half, getting up by 20 at the break, their largest halftime lead of the season.

It was much of the same in the second half, with the Crimson Hawks getting up by as much as 31 with just over nine minutes to play. Clarion would garner some momentum, cutting the lead to 18, but IUP closed the game out, securing the 21-point victory.

Norfleet finished the game with 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. He went 8-of-13 from the floor and collected only one foul in his 25 minutes of play.

Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) finished in double figures for the third straight game. He recorded 14 points and five rebounds and shot 6-of-7 from the field.

Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) recorded 13 points, one rebound and three assists while Cornell Yarde II (Reading, Pa. /Schuylkill Valley) had a career night, adding 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

IUP's leading scorer Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) had a quiet yet productive night, registering nine points, seven assists, three rebounds and two steals.

As a team, they shot 56.4 percent from the field, their highest percentage of the season. Despite only putting up 61 points, the Golden Eagles shot 42.0 percent.

The Crimson Hawks demolished the Golden Eagles in rebounds, grabbing 35 boards to Clarion's' 19. The team only committed 10 turnovers, while Clarion committed 12.

Win the win, IUP takes over sole possession of first place in the West, with a record of 18-2, 8-2. 

IUP will have a bye on Wednesday but will return to action Saturday, hosting Seton Hill in a rematch of a game that saw Keita sink a last second bucket for the 56-54 victory.

Seton Hill enters the game averaging 72.5 points per game, surrendering 68.2. They have the third best field goal percentage in the conference, connecting on 46.4 percent of their shots. Their three-point field goal percentage of 37.2 is good for second in the PSAC.

They've fallen in four of their last five games with losses coming against Mercyhurst, Gannon, Slippery Rock and Clarion. With a record of 12-8, 4-6 they're in fifth place in the PSAC West.
