CALIFORNIA, PA – Five players scored in double-figures as the seventh-ranked IUP men's basketball used a hot-shooting night to propel them to an 85-47 victory at California (PA) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Wednesday night.
Among the double-figure scorers was
Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School), who scored a season-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Had added five rebounds and three assists.
The Crimson Hawks improve to 20-2 on the season and still sit at the top of the PSAC West with a 10-2 divisional record. Cal falls to 9-14 overall and 4-9 in the division.
IUP finished shooting 32-of-52 from the field, a stifling 61.5 percent. The Crimson Hawks went 18-of-25 in the first half alone, helping them get out to a 42-22 halftime lead. They took an early 12-2 lead and kept the Vulcans at arm's length, later taking a 14-point lead at 25-11 after a layup by
Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep). IUP would finish the half on a 13-5 run, taking a 42-22 lead into halftime.
The Crimson Hawks lead reached 31 less than five minutes into the second half after a three-pointer by
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter). An 8-0 run midway through the half put IUP on top by 40 and a three by
Daniel Vigus (Catonsville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) gave the Crimson Hawks their largest lead of the game at 42 with 3:03 remaining as they cruised to the win.
Along with Jeffers,
Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) put together a solid all-around effort with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Keita added 13 points, seven boards and six assists, finishing 6-of-9 from the field.
Chance set a new career-high with nine assists, scoring 12 points and grabbing five rebounds.
Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) nearly gave the Crimson Hawks another double-figure scorer with nine points while also adding four blocks.
Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) scored 10 points.
The win tonight avenged the Crimson Hawks home loss to Cal back on Jan. 18. The Vulcans got the best of IUP that night 59-56, giving the Crimson Hawks their second consecutive loss.
This win sets up a battle for first place in the PSAC West on Saturday when the Crimson Hawks host Gannon (15-8, 10-3) at the KCAC. This will be the second such showdown for IUP this season, defeating rival Slippery Rock 66-64 back at home back on Jan. 25.
