Box Score

INDIANA, PA – Despite three players in double figures and a record setting crowd at the Kovalchick Complex, the seventh-ranked men's basketball team dropped its second contest of the season to Gannon, 67-62.

Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) led the way for the Crimson Hawks, recording 21 points. He was 6-of-11 from the floor, adding five three pointers.

Entering the game on an offensive explosion, IUP shot just 37.5 percent from the floor and a miserable 8-of-15 from the charity stripe.

It took about two minutes to get things going, as both teams were unable to score early on. Gannon got on the board first, sinking two free throws, followed by a three-pointer from Adam Blazek to take the five-point lead.

Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) got the Crimson Hawks on the board first, sinking a layup at the 15:28 mark, followed by another less than a minute later.

IUP was able to tie the game after nine minutes of play, when Souberbielle connected on one of two free throws.

Gannon regained the lead, but Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) swooshed a three ball with just under 10 to play and the IUP crowd came alive, igniting an offensive outburst that would give the Crimson Hawks the four-point advantage heading into the break.

In the first half, the Crimson Hawks shot 41.4 percent from the field and connected on 5-of-15 shots from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Golden Knights 14 to 12 and committed two fewer turnovers. Through 20 minutes of play they had already recorded eight steals but were just 2-of-6 from the free throw line.

IUP came out hot to start the second half, getting up by as much as eight with just over seven minutes to play. The Golden Knights, however, responded, going on a 10-0 run to regain the lead.

Souberbielle would again get the IUP offense going, sinking one of his five three balls, to put the Crimson Hawks up by one. The senior would nail another three to keep the game within IUP's reach with just under four minutes, cutting the Golden Knights' lead to two.

That's when Gannon would start running away with it, getting up by 10 with under a minute to play. Souberbielle drained a three with three seconds to go, but the Golden Knights walked away with the 67-62 victory.

This is the first time since the 2008-09 season that Gannon has swept the Crimson Hawks in the regular season.

In the second half, IUP was flat, shooting just 33.3 percent from the field. They were able to connect on 7-of-16 three pointers, five of which came from Souberbielle. Gannon outrebounded the nation's seventh-ranked team, 18-12 and committed just seven fouls in the final 20 minutes.

In addition to Souberbielle' 21 point performance, Chance also finished in double figures, posting 13 points, two rebounds, three assists and four steals. Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) finished the night with 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, one block and three steals.

With the loss, the Crimson Hawks fall to second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West with a record of 20-3, 10-3.
