THE SERIES
IUP holds the all-time series advantage with the Fighting Scots, 94-75, including a 69-66 win earlier this season. They have won the last 11 matchups, including a postseason victory in the first round of the PSAC tournament in 2012-13. Edinboro has never won at the Kovalchick Complex and has not won in Indiana since the 2007-08 season.
LAST TIME OUT
In the last meeting between these two teams, the Crimson Hawks snapped a two-game losing streak, sneaking out of Edinboro with a 69-66 victory. Sr. G
Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) led the way for the then 15th-ranked Crimson Hawks, recording 28 points, eight rebounds, four assists and one steal. Jr. G
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) added 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal. As a team, they shot 42.6 percent from the floor, holding Edinboro to a field goal percentage of 35.3.
REGIONAL RANKINGS
The first set of regional rankings were released Wednesday and the Crimson Hawks found themselves in the third spot behind West Liberty (1) and PSAC East rival East Stroudsburg (2). The top eight teams in each of the eight regions will qualify for the NCAA tournament which is set to get underway on March 15. The tournament bracket will be finalized and announced on Sunday, March 9. The Crimson Hawks have advanced to the NCAA tournament in each of the last five years, including a national title game appearance during the 2009-10 season. The only other teams to advance to the tournament at least three times since the 2009-10 season are West Liberty (4), East Stroudsburg (3) and Winston-Salem State (3).
PSAC TOURNAMENT BOUND
The defending PSAC champions have already clinched a spot in the conference tournament, which is slated to get underway on March 1. IUP has advanced to the tournament in each of the last six years, winning three of the last four. Six of the Crimson Hawks' nine PSAC championships have come since the 1999-2000 season, claiming the title in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2010, 2011 and 2013. The top six teams from the conference will qualify for postseason play, with the top two teams earning a first-round bye.
SENIOR NIGHT
During the game, the Crimson Hawks will honor the team's three seniors, Sr. G
Jesse Bosnik (St. Marys/Elk County Catholic), Sr. G
Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) and Sr. F
Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School). Bosnik, who joined the team prior to this season, has been stellar on defense, helping guide the team as one of the nation's top defensive powerhouses. Keita, who transferred from Division I Gonzaga prior to the 2012-13 season, made an immediate impact. He led the team in scoring in his first season with the Crimson Hawks, was named first team All-PSAC and was the PSAC tournament MVP. Souberbielle has been a four-year member of the Crimson Hawks, embracing a starting role from the beginning. A 1,000-point scorer, he has been apart of two PSAC Championships, three NCAA tournament appearances and has contributed to 96 victories with IUP.Â
SCOUTING EDINBORO
The Fighting Scots are led by one of the best big men in the league in C Sr. Bryan Theriot. The 6-5 Ohio native is fifth in the conference in scoring (17.6 ppg), fifth in rebounding (8.0 rpg), third in field goal percentage (59.5 %), and seventh in free throw percentage (82.1 %). At the guard position are So. G Henri Wade-Chatman and Jr. G Jonny Marsh who are the only other Fighting Scots to average double figures. Marsh's 14.0 points per game rank second on the team while Wade-Chatman's 12.9 puts him in third.Â
