Box Score
INDIANA, PA –
Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) scored 27 points to the lead 12th-ranked Crimson Hawks to a 78-65 win over Edinboro on Senior Night at the Kovalchick Complex.
Souberbielle was one of three IUP men's basketball players – along with
Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) and
Jesse Bosnik (St. Marys/Elk County Catholic) – honored prior to the game as seniors. Souberbielle was the lone four-year player and a 1,000-point scorer who has been a part of two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship teams. Keita was one last year's title team while Bosnik is enjoying a good year as a graduate student at IUP.
With the victory, the Crimson Hawks clinch the number two seed in the upcoming PSAC tournament and will receive a first round bye. They improve to 22-3 overall and 12-3 in the PSAC West. Edinboro falls to 9-16 overall and 2-13 in the division.
IUP will sit and watch the first round and then host the winner of the No. 3 seed vs. No. 6 seed on Tuesday, March 4.
It was a close first half that featured 16 lead changes and six ties as neither team was able to lead by more than five points. That five-point lead came from IUP as the Crimson Hawks took a 16-11 advantage on a
Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School) jumper with 12:58 to go in the half.
The Crimson Hawks grabbed a two-point lead on a layup by Souberbielle with 23 seconds left in the half but a jumper by Jonny Marsh with six seconds to go tied the game at 37-37 heading to halftime.
The Fighting Scots then grabbed their largest lead of the game early in the second half with scores on back-to-back possessions to take a 41-37 lead at the 17:56 mark. Souberbielle gave IUP the lead at 46-45 a little over three minutes later with a three-pointer which was apart of an IUP 13-0 run which gave the Crimson Hawks a 55-45 lead.
Even with 12 minutes to go, that run would be the nail in the coffin for Edinboro, as the Crimson Hawks held firm to their double-digit lead the rest of the way en route to a 13-point win.
IUP boasted five players in double-figures, led by Souberbielle. He finished an efficient 10-of-15 from the floor, also going 5-of-7 from the foul line with six rebounds and four steals in 37 minutes. Jeffers had 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting with five boards.
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter),
Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) and
Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) each added 10 points apiece.
The Crimson Hawks shot 50.0 percent from the floor and turned the ball over just eight times while forcing Edinboro into 15 turnovers.
IUP will head to rival Slippery Rock next Wednesday for the regular season finale. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
