Softball Wraps Up Shaw University Challenge, Splits Final Two Games

RALEIGH, NC – The Crimson Hawks softball team split its second set of games Sunday afternoon, wrapping up play in the Shaw University Softball Challenge.

IUP started off the day with a 3-2 loss at the hands of Columbus State but followed that up with a 9-7 victory over Fairmont State in the team's last game of the tournament.

Pitching 2.2 innings, Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) led the way for the Crimson Hawks against Fairmont State, in relief of starter Emily Hofmann (Dublin/Pennridge). Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson) got things going for the team, knocking one out of the park in her first at bat. Stef McCoy was 3-for-4 from the plate with a run scored and an RBI.

Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) had a single and two walks, going 3-for-4 in the game.

Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) suffered the loss in first game of the day as the team fell 3-2 to Columbus State. Mitchell posted a triple and a run scored while McCoy was 1-of-3 with an RBI double and a run scored.

Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) claimed a single and a walk in her 1-for-3 night, while Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Crimson Hawks wrap up the tournament with a record of 2-2 in their first action of the season. They will hit the field again on March 14, traveling to Salem, VA for the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament.

There, they'll face off against Charleston, West Virginia State, Fairmont State, Shepherd, Winston-Salem State and Concord in the three-day tournament.
