Softball Improves to 4-0 in West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Salem, VA – The IUP softball team picked up another pair of victories, improving to 4-0 on the weekend, at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in Salem, Va.

The Crimson Hawks started the day off defeating Fairmont State 6-5 in extra innings and moving on to defeat Shepherd 3-1.

In the first game, Fairmont State got things going in the bottom of the first, launching a solo homer to take the 1-0 lead.

IUP responded in the third inning when Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson) hit an RBI single that drove in Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area). Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) reached base on a single and Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) knocked both players in to give IUP the 3-1 lead.

Both teams were kept off the scoresheet until the sixth inning when Fairmont State tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run double.

Through the first seven innings, the score was tied, sending play into extras.

A single by Mitchell and an error by the Fairmont State leftfielder scored Francis, who was on second due to the international tiebreaker rule. Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) would bring home Mitchell on a single to give IUP the two-run advantage.

Ward then stole second and scored on a fielding error by the second baseman to put IUP up 6-3.

To start the bottom half of the eighth inning, Fairmont State got one run on the board quickly, but the Crimson Hawks were able to hold off runners on second and third to claim the win.

Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) pitched a complete game, getting the win allowing just two earned runs with no walks and one strikeout.

Mitchell finished the morning 2-of-4 with two runs scored. Mercer added a single and a triple.

In the second game, IUP got off to a rough start, surrendering three straight walks and allowing the Rams to score on a wild pitch.

The Crimson Hawks responded in the second, with a three-run homerun from Angela Devereaux (Oakdale/West Allegheny). The homer was the first of her collegiate career. She brought home Ward who had reached base on a double and Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) who walked.

That would be all the scoring for the game, as IUP walked away with the 3-1 victory.

Emily Hofmann (Dublin/Pennridge) got the win, going four innings giving up five walks and two hits with two strikeouts in the first four innings. Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) came in relief of Hofmann, giving up one hit, one walk and one strikeout in three innings and earning the save.

Mitchell had another strong outing, going 2-of-3 with two doubles. Viguers and Ward each pounded out a double while Devereaux's three-run homer brought in the Crimson Hawks' only runs of the games. Mauk finished the morning 1-of-2 with a run scored and a walk.

With the victories, IUP improves to 4-0 in the tournament and 6-2 overall. They'll finish up the tournament with two games tomorrow, playing against Winston-Salem State at 9 a.m. and Concord at 11 a.m.
