WASHINGTON, PA – A two-run homerun by
Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) in the seventh proved to be the difference as the IUP baseball team edged out a 3-2 win over Penn State Greater Allegheny on Tuesday afternoon.
The homer came right after
Jonathan O'Neill (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) singled up the middle, bringing
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) around from second to give IUP a 3-1 lead.
With the Crimson Hawks trailing 1-0 heading into the seventh, Uhl led off the inning with a double to right. O'Neill's single was timely, as the two batters after Uhl both tallied outs and threatened to strand him at second.
Following Jones' homerun,
Chris Calliari (Brockway/Brockway) bunt singled and
Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) walked, putting two more runners on as IUP threatened to widen its lead. However, a flyout to centerfield ended that threat.
Greater Allegheny got one back in the bottom half, getting a leadoff double followed by a single two batters later to make it 3-2.
IUP got another leadoff double by Uhl in the eighth, but even after an
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) walk put two runners on, Greater Allegheny fanned three straight batters to end the top half.
Austin Mock (State College/State College) then stepped to the mound and tossed the last two innings for the Crimson Hawks, giving up one hit and striking out two to earn his second save of the season. He also moved into third place all-time in school history with nine career saves.
Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North) got the start on the rubber for IUP, going four innings and giving up six hits while striking out five and giving up one earned run.
Zach Chinchilla (Ambridge/Quigley Catholic) picked up his first career win in relief, striking out two and giving up three hits and one earned run in three innings of work.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 5-6 overall on the season while Greater Allegheny falls to 7-2.
IUP is back on the diamond tomorrow, traveling to Millersville to face the Marauders in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
