JOHNSTOWN, PA – The Crimson Hawks dropped a pair of close Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West games to Seton Hill on Thursday, falling to the Griffins 4-3 and 2-0 in a doubleheader played at Point Stadium in Johnstown.
The losses drop IUP to 9-10 overall on the season and an even 3-3 in PSAC West play. Conference newcomer Seton Hill improves to 16-9 and 5-1.
The Crimson Hawks gained a 3-0 lead in the opener, getting a trio of one-run innings in the first, second and fourth.
Austin Mock (State College/State College) got things going in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to left, bringing around
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) from second.
Chris Calliari (Brockway/Brockway) made it a 2-0 game with his own RBI single to left, scoring
Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) in the second. It was Bigler who then knocked in
Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) with a sacrifice fly to center in the fourth.
The Griffins were held at bay through four innings, with IUP starter
Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) giving up just one hit to that point in the game. But Seton Hill began the fifth with back-to-back singles and three batters later got a two-run, two-out single by Brendan Constantino to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Zaorski started the sixth inning with two straight outs, but a hit-by-pitch and a single put two runners at first and second. An error loaded the bases for Mike Malacane, who's single up the middle brought home two runs and gave Seton Hill a 4-3 lead.
The Crimson Hawks led off the next two innings with hits, as
Jonathan O'Neill (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) doubled in the sixth and Calliari singled in the seventh. But the Crimson Hawks were unable to bring either around with the remaining six outs.
Zaorski took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the year. He gave eight hits and two earned runs, walking one in seven innings. IUP totaled eight hits, with two coming off the bat of Calliari. The Crimson Hawks 4-thru-9 hitters each had one hit.
Zach DeTillio (Pittsburgh/Seneca Valley) got the ball in game two and had another solid pitching performance for the Crimson Hawks, giving up just one earned run in seven innings.
The Griffins got their runs in the second and fourth innings on a sacrifice fly and wild pitch, respectively. IUP got runners into scoring position with less than two outs in the first, third and seventh innings, but couldn't capitalize on any of the opportunities.
The Crimson Hawks totaled four hits, including two coming from
Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel). DeTillio picked up his first loss, falling to 2-1 on the year.
This doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at IUP's Dougherty Field on Saturday, but predicted inclement weather, plus poor field conditions, pushed this twinbill to the turf in Johnstown. These two teams will play again in Greensburg on Sunday afternoon as Seton Hill's home games were moved from Friday due to rain in the forecast. First pitch on Sunday is set for 1 p.m.
