Baseball Drops Road Doubleheader to Seton Hill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENSBURG, PA – Seton Hill made it a season sweep over the Crimson Hawks as IUP dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Greensburg. The Griffins edged IUP 2-1 in the game one and had a 12-4 win in the nightcap.

The Crimson Hawks fall to 9-12 overall and 3-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West while Seton Hill improves to 18-9 and 7-1.

The opener was another solid outing for starter Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North), who gave up just three hits and two earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.

The Griffins' first hit off Weed didn't come until the third inning, although it did some damage as Chris Miller homered over the fence in left to give Seton Hill the first run of the game. Weed didn't allow another hit until the fifth when a leadoff double was eventually followed by a two-out RBI single to center.

That gave the Griffins a 2-1 lead, as IUP had tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge). Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) had led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a bunt single by Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity). Two batters later, Tice flew out to center field, bringing Jones in to score after he had moved to third one batter earlier.

The Crimson Hawks did have good chances to tie and take the lead, loading the bases with one out in the sixth and putting a runner in scoring position with two down in the seventh. But in both cases, Seton Hill's relievers were able to get out of trouble to come away with the 2-1 win.

IUP had seven hits in the game, including two by Chris Calliari (Brockway/Brockway). Weed and Zach Chinchilla (Ambridge/Quigley Catholic), who tossed 1.1 innings in relief, forced Seton Hill's 1-5 batters to go just 1-for-13 from the plate. Chinchilla didn't allow a baserunner and had one strike out.

It was the Crimson Hawks who struck first in the second game, taking advantage of a Seton Hill error in the second inning to go on top 1-0. The Griffins came right back in the bottom half, however, scoring six runs to take control of the ballgame.

Seton Hill went on to score six more runs over the next three innings while IUP added one in the fifth and two more in the sixth. IUP's remaining runs came on RBI singles, with Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) knocking in Calliari in the fifth and Tice bringing around Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) and Matt Eperesi (Cranberry Twp./Mars) in the sixth.

Austin Mock (State College/State College) got the start in game two, but the Griffins knocked him out in the second inning. Matt Douglas (Canonsburg/Canon-McMillan), Devin Doutt (Lower Burrell/Burrell) and Jason Martin (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley) all pitched at least one inning for the Crimson Hawks.

IUP had eight hits in game two, with two again coming from Calliari while another two came off the bat of Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys).

This begins a busy week for the Crimson Hawks, who are scheduled to play 10 games from Monday thru Sunday. They'll be in action again tomorrow when they travel to Erie for a doubleheader against Mercyhurst. First pitch is for 1 p.m.
