Box Score 2 INDIANA, PA – The Crimson Hawks collected 17 hits but couldn't keep up with Pitt-Johnstown as IUP lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Mountain Cats in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West baseball doubleheader on Saturday.
The Mountain Cats took game one 13-9 and game two 9-2.
IUP fell to 12-19 overall on the year and 6-12 in the PSAC West. The Mountain Cats improve to 15-9 and 10-8. Pitt-Johnstown closes out season series with a four game sweep after also winning both games on Friday.
The nine runs in the opening game were the second most of the season for the Crimson Hawks. They took the early lead with three runs in the first, including back-to-back sacrifice flies by
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) and
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown).
The Mountain Cats tied the game in the third before going on top 7-3 with four more runs in the fourth inning. IUP bounced right back in the bottom half, starting things off with a two-run homerun by
Jonathan O'Neill (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley). The Crimson Hawks plated two more in the inning, including one run off an RBI single by
Dylan Tice (Perkasie/Pennridge), tying the game at 7-7.
After a two-run sixth from Pitt-Johnstown gave the Mountain Cats a two-run lead, IUP again tied the score with RBI singles by Tice and
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) in the sixth.
Pitt-Johnstown scored the final runs of the game, adding four insurance runs in the seventh on five hits to come out with the opening game win.
The two teams combined for 21 hits and five errors in the opener.
Zach Chinchilla (Ambridge/Quigley Catholic) took the loss for the Crimson Hawks, falling to 2-1 on the season.
Pitt-Johnstown took a commanding lead in the second game, scoring one in the second and four more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. RBI singles by
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys/St. Marys) and
Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity) in the fifth and sixth, respectively, but UPJ added four more in the final two innings to come away with the seven-run victory.
Jared Weed (Washington Crossing/Council Rock North) got the loss, falling to 2-4 on the year. Uhl and Tice each collected two hits apice as IUP had eight total in the game.
The Crimson Hawks return to the diamond on Tuesday when they host Mercyhurst in PSAC West action at Dougherty Field.
