Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) defeated 23rd-ranked Anne Li Briand and Yahsha Moore at No. 1 doubles but it wasn't enough on Saturday as the IUP women's tennis team lost to visiting Wayne State (Mich.) by a score of 7-2 at the Maple Street Courts.
It was a battle of two top 50 teams in Division II, with the Crimson Hawks ranked 44th and Wayne State sitting at No. 45. IUP is second in the Atlantic Region while the Warriors are third in the Midwest.
The Crimson Hawks fall to 13-8 overall on the season while Wayne State improves to 22-4. It was the Warriors first match since March 10.
Timko and Schnaas defeated Li Briand and Moore by a score of 8-4. It was the first doubles win for the Crimson Hawks over a nationally-ranked opponent this season and it helped Schnaas get to 63 career doubles wins, tied for fifth all-time in school history.
Wayne State took the other two doubles matches, with IUP's
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) and
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) falling 8-2 at No. 2 and
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) dropping at No. 3 by a score of 8-3.
Butland accounted for the other IUP victory, getting hers at the No. 2 singles spot. She defeated Andreea Mitrache by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Timko saw her streak of nine consecutive singles wins come to an end on Saturday, falling to Moore 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1. Moore is ranked sixth in the latest Midwest rankings.
Mahto went to three sets at the No. 4 singles spot, eventually falling to Li Briand 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). McFail dropped the No. 5 spot 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 and
Roxana Viviana Yeh (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Cangallo Schule) lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at No. 6. The other loss came at No. 3, which Schnaas falling 6-4, 6-4.
This was the first of two matches for the Crimson Hawks this weekend, as they face 46th-ranked Grand Valley State tomorrow. These are the final matches before the 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships begin on Monday. IUP has clinched the second seed and will host third-seeded Mercyhurst.
