Offense Shines Again in Softball's Sweep of Gannon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

INDIANA, PA – Dominant offense led by five different players with RBI, helped the Crimson Hawks to a sweep of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West rival Gannon Thursday afternoon.

Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) and the Crimson Hawks blanked the Golden Knights in the first game 3-0, before moving on to take the second game 6-1.

The only scoring in game one came in the third inning when IUP's offense came alive. Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) got things started, sending a double to center field, bringing home Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area), who had reached base after a single and a throwing error by the centerfielder.

Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) followed that up with a double to centerfield that brought Mitchell home. Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) brought in the game's final run of the game, singling up the middle to score Jenn Krider (Conneaut Lake/Linesville) who entered the game as a pinch runner for Viguers.

It was a pitcher's duel for the remainder of the game as Campbell squared off with Gannon's Olivia Gumbita. Campbell would get the best of the Golden Knights, however, pitching a complete game, allowing just five hits, no runs and one walk while striking out four.

With the victory, Campbell improves to 8-6 on the season with a team-low 2.25 ERA.

Mercer wrapped up game one going 3-of-4 with one run scored, while Mitchell was 2-of-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a double. Viguers was also 2-of-3, adding a double and an RBI.

Similar to the first game, the Crimson Hawks were again dominant in game two, walking away with the 6-1 victory and the series sweep.

Both teams were held off the scoresheet until the fourth inning when a wild pitch brought home Stef McCoy to give the Crimson Hawks the 1-0 lead.

IUP put up two more runs in the fifth. Mercer started off the inning sending a single up the middle and Mauk responded with a single of her own, advancing Mercer to third. Mauk stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch that brought home Mercer.

In the next at bat, Mitchell singled to left field, scoring Mauk.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Crimson Hawks plated two more runs, taking the 6-0 advantage. Mercer reached on a fielder's choice and was able to score on a single by Mauk. A double from Mitchell advanced Mauk to third and McCoy's single to left field brought home Mauk.

Gannon added their only run of the game in the top of the seventh.

Five Crimson Hawks finished game two with two hits, including McCoy who went 2-of-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Mitchell was 2-of-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI while Mauk was also 2-of-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) earned the win for the Crimson Hawks, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out two. Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) entered in relief of Senn, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing one run off of two hits and striking out one.

With the victories, IUP improves to 20-10, 13-5 on the season in second place in the PSAC West. They'll continue their busy week, playing four straight doubleheaders. Tomorrow they will travel to Clarion for an afternoon matchup with the Golden Eagles before returning home to host Seton Hill.

First pitch from Clarion is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. while things are slated to get underway against the Griffins at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.
