Box Score 2 INDIANA, PA –
Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge) knocked in four of IUP's six runs as the Crimson Hawks split a pair of one-run ball games with Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West softball action on Saturday.
IUP picked up a come-from-behind 4-3 win in game one but lost 3-2 to the Griffins in the nightcap. The loss ended the Crimson Hawks' nine-game winning streak as they ended the day with a 23-11 overall record and a 16-6 mark in the PSAC West. Seton Hill is now 19-13 overall and 9-11.
McCoy finished the day 3-for-5 with two doubles and those four RBI. She also stole two bases as IUP swiped a total of eight on the day.
The Griffins got the first runs of the opener, scoring three in the top of the fourth on a bases loaded walk and a run-scoring single. IUP struck back with an RBI double by McCoy, which brought
Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) around from second base.
McCoy's second double of the afternoon came at an even bigger moment, as the Crimson Hawks had loaded the bases for her in the fifth inning. With first base open, the Griffins elected to intentionally walk Mitchell - the three-hitter for IUP - to load the bases for McCoy. She responded with a double down the left field line, clearing the bases and giving the Crimson Hawks a 4-3 lead.
IUP starter
Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) then got out of a slight jam in the sixth and got the Griffins to go 1-2-3 in the seventh to preserve the comeback victory. She picked up her fifth straight win to improve to 10-6 on the season, striking out six and giving up three earned in her 15
th complete game of the season.
Seton Hill led off the scoring again in game two, getting two runs on a single in the second. IUP got one back in the third on a sacrifice fly out by
Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area), but the Griffins again made it a two-run game with a run-scoring base hit in the fourth.
Mercer picked up her second RBI of the day on an infield hit in the fifth, scoring Megan Carney from second. Mercer then promptly stole second but Seton Hill forced a pop out to end the threat.
In the seventh,
Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) pinch ran for Carney, who had a one-out single, and immediately swiped second. But she could not advance as the Griffins got a strikeout and a foul out to close out the one-run game.
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) took the loss for IUP, dropping to 9-3 on the year after giving up two earned runs in 4.1 innings.
Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) tossed the last 2.2 innings, striking out three without a hit.
The doubleheader ended a string of four in four consecutive days for IUP, which earlier in the week was ranked sixth in the NCAA's initial Atlantic Region rankings. The top eight after conference tournaments are over will advance to NCAA Division II regional tournaments.
The Crimson Hawks have four more doubleheaders left on the schedule for next week, with three coming against PSAC West foes. They'll start on Monday with a road trip to Lock Haven before returning home to host Clarion on Wednesday.
