Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) hit two homeruns and
Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge) had three doubles to help lead IUP to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West doubleheader sweep of Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon in Erie.
Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) and
Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) also hit homeruns as the Crimson Hawks won game one 10-1 and game two 12-2 in five innings.
The Crimson Hawks improve to 27-13 overall and locked up the West's second seed for the upcoming PSAC tournament with a 20-6 divisional mark. Mercyhurst falls to 15-26-1 and 9-16-1.
Mercer went a combined 6-for-8 with those two homers, four RBI and five runs scored. McCoy went 4-for-6 on the day with three doubles and four RBI while Mauk finished 4-for-8 with a homerun, four RBI and five runs scored.
Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) and
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) picked up the wins in the circle for the Crimson Hawks today. Campbell tossed her 18
th complete game and improved to 12-7 after giving up just two hits and one earned in seven innings. Spindler improved to 10-3 after giving up two hits and no earned runs in four innings in game two.
Tara Senn (Eagle/Downington East) tossed the final inning, giving up two hits and two runs.
The Crimson Hawks got three runs each in the second and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead.
Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) was responsible for the first runs of the game, bringing
Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) and
Jenn Krider (Conneaut Lake/Linesville) around with a single in the second. Mauk's single a few batters later brought Gould across the plate.
The runs in the fourth came from Mauk, Mitchell and McCoy. Gould again scored when Mauk flew out to center. Mitchell then doubled home Mercer before coming around on a single by McCoy.
The Crimson Hawks added one in the fifth on a sacrifice bunt by Spindler and three more in the seventh on run scoring hits from Mauk and McCoy.
Mercyhurst got its only game one run on a solo homer in the fourth.
IUP scored in four of the five innings in game two, including two in each of the first two innings. Mercer started things off with a solo shot to lead off the game before Mauk came around on a McCoy double three batters later. The two in the second came on a single by Mitchell.
Mitchell's homerun came in the fourth, smashing it over the fence in center, scoring Mauk and Mercer to put IUP on top 7-0. The Crimson Hawks added five more in the fifth, highlighted by back-to-back homers from Mercer and Mauk, in addition to RBI base hits from
Lauren Hogue (Seneca/Cranberry) and Megan Carney.
Mercyhurst scored two in the bottom half but it wasn't enough as the Crimson Hawks got the mercy rule victory.
Mitchell finished 3-for-7 on the day with a double, homer and five RBI, and also scored a pair of runs. Gould scored four total runs.
The wins were the third and fourth in a row for the Crimson Hawks, who head into their final doubleheader of the regular season tomorrow afternoon when they host Slippery Rock on Senior Day. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
