Crimson Hawks Net another Win, Extend Win Streak to Six Matches

Box Score coming soon

ASHLAND, OH – The 44th-ranked IUP women's tennis team had no problem taking down Great Lakes Intercollegeiate Athletic Conference opponent Ashland, as the Crimson Hawks took Saturday's match, 8-1.

The Crimson Hawks now ride a six-match win streak, improving their overall record to 12-5. Ashland, who has now lost two in a row, fall to 10-12 on the season.

The ladies picked a perfect time to start putting things together as a team, with a crucial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West matchup at home on Tuesday against rival California (Pa).

The No. 2 doubles team, Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) and Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School), ran away with the first match 8-2, giving the Crimson Hawks their first points of the day. Also with a doubles victory today was the No. 1 team. Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) won decisively, 8-4.

The only loss IUP suffered today came from the No.3 duo. Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) and Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) could not get in sync today, as they lost their second match in a row together, by a score of 8-2.

Wood and Mahto did not let the loss emerge over their singles play however. Wood put the doubles match in the back of her head, as she stormed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Her partner, Mahto, also won her singles match. Though it went to a third set, she was able to hold on for the win, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.

Playing at No. 2, Schnaas had to play three sets as well today. After winning the first and dropping the second set, she found her rhythm she started her match with, and earned the victory in third set, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

The other Crimson Hawks to earn wins today were, No. 1 Timko, 6-4, 6-4, No. 3 Butland, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 6 McFail 6-3, 6-1.

The Crimson Hawks return home tomorrow to face Chestnut Hill. The match time is set for 11:00 a.m. and will be hosted by the Maple Street Courts.
