Mitchell Adds Two More Homers as IUP Splits Doubleheader with Slippery Rock

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference home run leader Jasa Mitchell (Snow Shoe/Bald Eagle Area) added two more to her season total, leading the Crimson Hawks to a split against West rival Slippery Rock Sunday afternoon.

Both of Mitchell's deep balls came in the second game, as the Crimson Hawks claimed the 7-1 victory over The Rock. Slippery Rock claimed the first game 10-2 in five innings.

In the first game, Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) got IUP on the board first, blasting a two-run shot to center field, scoring herself and Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson) and giving the Crimson Hawks the 2-0 lead.

It was all Slippery Rock from there on out, as The Rock would go on to score eight unanswered runs over the next five innings to claim the 10-2 victory.

Mercer finished the game 1-of-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Angela Devereaux (Oakdale/West Allegheny) added the Crimson Hawks' only other hits, going 2-of-2 with two singles.

Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) suffered her third loss of the season, going 4.2 innings giving up 12 hits, 10 runs (four earned), with one walk and three strikeouts.

In the second game, neither team was able to score through the first three innings until Mitchell connected on her seventh homer of the season in the fourth, giving IUP the 1-0 lead. A homerun from The Rock in the bottom half of the inning tied the game at 1-1.

Both teams again struggled until the seventh when the IUP offense came alive.

Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) gave the Crimson Hawks the one-run advantage, sending a single to right field and scoring Stef McCoy. Carney would advance to second on a wild pitch and would be replaced by Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) to pinch run.

Kaylee Prendergast (West Chester/Villa Maria Academy) doubled in the next at bat, bringing Gould home. With the top of the order up, Mercer singled to left field, advancing to second on the throw and bringing home Prendergast. Mercer would advance to third on a wild pitch.

Back-to-back homeruns from Francis and Mitchell would cap off IUP's scoring montage, sending The Rock into the bottom of the seventh trailing by six.

Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) closed out the game, sitting down three of Slippery Rock's four batters and securing the 7-1 IUP victory. She pitched a complete game, giving up just four hits and one run with five strikeouts.

Mitchell finished her outing going 3-of-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Francis was 1-of-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Mitchell is now sixth all-time in IUP history with 21 career home runs. She sits just seven homers shy of the all-time record set by Sarah White from 2003-06.

The Crimson Hawks are now 13-5 on the season in second place in the PSAC West.

They'll return to action on Thursday, hosting Wheeling Jesuit in non-conference action. The doubleheader is set to get underway at 3 p.m. from South Campus.
