Shorthanded Crimson Hawks Bested by Chestnut Hill

INDIANA, PA –Forfeiting two wins due to various injuries, the 44th-ranked Crimson Hawks dropped a 6-3 non-conference women's tennis match to Chestnut Hill on Sunday afternoon at the Maple Street Courts.
 
IUP drops to 12-6 overall on the year while Chestnut Hill improves to 14-6 overall. The Griffins are ranked 48th in the nation and fourth in the East Region while the Crimson Hawks are second in the Atlantic.
 
IUP had one forfeit in doubles and another in singles as Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park), Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and Roxana Viviana Yeh (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Cangallo Schule) were all forced to sit out.
 
The one victory for the Crimson Hawks in doubles play came from the team of Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) at No. 1 as they defeated Charlotte Dawson and Marie Deleval 9-8. Dawson and Deleval are the sixth-ranked team in the East Region. It was also Timko and Schnaas' seventh consecutive win.
 
Playing at number two, Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) and Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) lost to Kelly Dennis and Iman Williams-Mulesa 8-2.
 
In singles play, Timko defeated Dawson in a marathon three-setter, 5-7, 6-4, 12-10. The win at No. 1 was Timko's seventh straight singles win and came over the seventh-ranked player in the East.
 
IUP's other win came at No. 2 when Schnaas defeated Williams-Mulesa, the 14th-ranked player in the East, by a score of 6-1, 6-2.
 
Mahto took a 6-0, 6-2 loss at No. 3 while Wood fell 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) dropped a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 set at No. 5.
 
IUP gets back to conference play on Tuesday when it hosts No. 12 California (PA) in a battle for the top spot in the PSAC West.
