Box Score 2 CALIFORNIA, PA – The Crimson Hawks traveled to division-leading California (Pa.), coming home with a pair of losses at the hands of the Vulcans.
IUP fell 4-2 in the first game and 9-5 in the second.
In the first game, neither team was able to score until the Vulcans broke it open in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs off three hits and an error.
The Crimson Hawks got on the board in the second inning when
Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) singled to center field bringing in
Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) and Stef McCoy. That would be all IUP could muster, as
Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson) struck out swinging in the next at bat, securing the 4-2 victory for the Vulcans.
Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) suffered the loss for IUP, falling to 5-4 on the season. She surrendered seven hits in 6.0 innings pitched with two earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
Mercer finished the game going 2-of-3 with a walk and the game's only two RBI. Carney was 1-of-1 with a run scored and McCoy got the game's only other hit, going 1-of-3.
Game two started off in the Crimson Hawks' favor when Mercer doubled down left center field, scoring Campbell to give the team the 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Cal responded, taking the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third.
IUP responded in the following inning. Scoring four runs off four hits.
McCoy got the inning going, singling to center field. She advanced to second during the next at bat when
Mary Ward (Hatfield/North Penn) singled to left field, forcing a pitching change for the Vulcans.
Christi Mauk (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher.
Carney brought the runners around, crushing a three-run bomb to left field in the next at bat.
Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East) gave IUP the 5-3 lead, following up the Carney homer with a shot of her own.
The Vulcans regained the lead in the fifth inning, scoring four runs off a pair of two-run homeruns. They then went on to score two more in the bottom of the sixth to take the 9-5 advantage.
The Crimson Hawks failed to score in the bottom half of the inning, and fell victim of the Cal sweep.
Emily Hofmann (Dublin/Pennridge) suffered the loss in the second game, pitching 3.0 innings in relief of starter
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral). Hofmann gave up five hits and six runs, walking one and striking out one. Spindler also pitched 3.0 innings, giving up three runs and three hits, walking two and striking out one.
Carney finished the game 1-of-2 with three RBI and a run scored. Viguers was 2-of-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Mercer was 1-of-3 with an RBI.
With the losses, the Crimson Hawks fall to 13-7 on the season and 7-3 in conference play. They'll return home for a non-conference doubleheader with Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
