Timko Knocks off Nation’s No. 5 Player in IUP’s Loss to Cal

INDIANA, PA – Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) kept her impressive streak alive as she knocked off the region's top and Division II's fifth-ranked player in IUP's loss to rival California (PA) in a battle between the top two teams in the Atlantic Region on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Timko defeated Lucie Sipkova at No. 1 in a three-set thriller, 1-6, 6-3, 10-8. It was Timko's eighth consecutive singles victory and seventh over a regionally-ranked opponent. Five of those regionally-ranked players are ranked in the top 12 in the Atlantic, including Sipkova who is tops in the region.
 
The loss was the first for the 44th-ranked Crimson Hawks in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West as they fall to 12-7 overall and 4-1 in the division. Cal improves to 9-2 overall and 5-0.
 
The rest of the women had a difficult time today against the Vulcans. No. 2 Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) only played one game before having to retire from the match. Her opponent, Ramona Czakon is ranked third in the region. No. 3 Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) lost her match to Lucie Rey 2-6, 1-6.
 
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman), IUP's No. 4, also played a regionally ranked (seven) opponent in Kiefer Shaw. Mahto was competitive taking six total games, but ultimately lost the match 3-6, 3-6.
 
Other Crimson Hawks to suffer defeats today were No. 5 Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) 0-6, 0-6, and No, 6 Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ), 3-6, 2-6.
 
The Crimson Hawks doubles teams, who have been playing well as of late, could not find the answer today. All three of the teams combined to win only nine games, failing to pick up a win. No. 1 Timko and Schnaas lost 3-8 against the 11th-ranked doubles team in the nation, and first in the region. No. 2 McFail and Butland lost 2-8, and No. 3 Mahto and Wood fell 4-8.
 
The Crimson Hawks look to bounce back tomorrow when they travel to Edinboro to face the Fighting Scots. The match time is set for 3:00 p.m.
