Crimson Hawks Fall to Barry in NCAA Women’s Tennis Round of 16

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – After yet another successful year for the Crimson Hawks, their 2013-14 campaign came to a close today with a 5-0 loss to top-ranked Barry University on the first day of the 2014 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships.
 
IUP ends its season with a 19-10 overall record, also putting together its fourth consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference runner-up showing and its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA round of 16.
 
The Buccaneers (25-1) got off to a hot start in doubles play with three victories. IUP's Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) fell 8-1 at No. 2 to the seventh-ranked team of Linda Fritschken and Emma Onila to start things off. Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) then lost to Kimmy Twelker and Anaeve Pain, the sixth-ranked team in the nation, by a score of 8-0 at No. 1 while Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) and Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) fell to Blanka Szavay Goia 8-0 at No. 3.
 
In singles play, Elisabeth Abanda earned Barry's first victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mahto at No. 4. Fritschken then clinched things for the Buccaneers with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Schnaas at No. 3. Fritschken is ranked 23rd in the nation in singles play.
 
The remaining Crimson Hawks trailed in their matches to a dominant Barry squad. Timko trailed Onila, the seventh-ranked player in the nation, by a score of 6-1, 5-2 and Butland was down 6-1, 1-2 to ninth-ranked Goia.
 
Also down was Wood 6-0, 5-2 to Cristina Valladares at No. 5 and McFail 6-1, 2-1 to Akemi Maehama at No. 6.
 
With the win, Barry advances to the quarterfinals to play the winner of Concordia (NY) and Southwest Baptist on Thursday.
