Crimson Hawks’ Season Ends at NCAA Women's Tennis Championships

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The IUP women's tennis team's season came to an end on Wednesday with a 5-0 loss to BYU-Hawaii in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Division II Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
 
The Crimson Hawks end their year with a 19-8 overall record as they had advanced to the NCAA championships for the fifth consecutive season.
 
33rd-ranked IUP faced its toughest competition of the season in BYU-Hawaii as the Seasiders entered as the third-ranked team in Division II and the top seed in the West Region.
 
The Seasiders (31-1) feature a pair of nationally-ranked doubles teams, including second-ranked Karen Liu and Dallas Zhang at the No. 1 spot. IUP's top pair – Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) – fell to Liu and Zhang by a score of 8-1.
 
At No. 2, Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) lost to 22nd-ranked Leah Han and Marietta Tuionetoa by a score of 8-2. The Seasiders collected another 8-2 win at the third spot as Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) lost to Kanela Adamson and Jade Griffin.
 
In singles play, Han put BYU-Hawaii on top 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Wood at the sixth spot. Timko then fell to Zhang – the top-ranked singles player in Division II – by a score of 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.
 
Von Agris highlighted the unfinished scores for IUP, as she led Jeong-Min Jeon 6-2, 2-1 at the No. 5 spot. Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) was trailing Tuinetoa 6-0, 2-2 at No. 3, Butland was behind 6-2, 5-2 at No. 4, and Petercakova was losing 6-2, 5-0 to Liu at No. 2. Liu is ranked sixth in the nation while Tuinetoa is ranked seventh.
 
BYU-Hawaii advances to face St. Mary's (Tex.) in the national quarterfinals on Thursday.
 
The loss ends the collegiate careers of IUP seniors Timko and Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park). Timko is the most decorated player in program history, earning two consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Year awards, this year's ITA Atlantic Region Senior of the Year award, and owns school records in career singles, doubles, and combined victories. McCormick has faced injury issues over the past season-and-a-half, but the 2014 ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch finishes her career with 103 combined victories, including 54 singles wins.
 
IUP finished as the PSAC runner-up for the fifth straight season and also served as a host for the NCAA Atlantic Region Championships for the fifth consecutive year.
