AT A GLANCE
The IUP women's tennis team is set to compete in the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships, which begin this week with the champion to be crowned on Saturday, April 30 at Bloomsburg University.
Â
THE SEEDS
California (Pa.) won the PSAC West with a 6-0 divisional record to earn the first round bye. IUP (5-1) is the second seed while Mercyhurst (4-2) is third in the West. In the East, West Chester earned the top seed with a 6-0 regular season. Millersville (5-1) is the two and Bloomsburg (4-2) is third.
Â
THE SCHEDULE
The second seed from each division hosts its respective third seed in the quarterfinals this week. The "final four" will then meet at tournament host Bloomsburg for the semifinals and championship this weekend. The No. 1 seed will play the 2/3 winner from the opposite division on Friday, with those winners facing off for the championship on Saturday.
Â
ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER POSTSEASON APPEARANCE
IUP is making its sixth consecutive PSAC tournament appearance, dating back to 2011. Each of the previous five years the Crimson Hawks have finished as the runners-up in the conference, falling to California (Pa.) in the championship. This is IUP's 11th all-time berth in the PSACs, also making it each year from 2001-05.
Â
WHAT'S ON THE LINE
The Crimson Hawks are seeking the program's first ever PSAC title, and would also break Cal's current nine-year run. A win in the championship could also vault IUP into the top spot in the Atlantic Region heading into the NCAA Championships.
Â
THE LINEUP
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) is slated at the No. 1 singles spot for the Crimson Hawks, where she went 15-6 this spring, including a 5-1 PSAC West record.
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) will play at two where she has a 7-3 record. She's 16-3 overall in dual matches this spring.
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon), with a 10-2 record this year, will play at three while
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) (10-8) will play at four,
Claudia Menes (Spain/San Eutiquio) (19-2) will be No. 6, and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) (17-3) will be six.
Â
In doubles play, Petercakova and von Agris (14-6) will play at one, Wood and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) (6-3) will team at two, and Gonzalez and Menes (1-1) will be listed at three.
Â
IN THE (TEAM) RANKINGS
The Crimson Hawks enter this week ranked second in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Rankings. These rankings decide the eight teams in the region that will advance to the NCAA Championships. The top two seeds in the Atlantic will serve as hosts in the regional. IUP is also ranked No. 36 in Division II in the latest ITA national rankings. Cal (18th) and Mercyhurst (46th) are the only other PSAC schools in the top 50.
