IUP Softball wins three games on first two days at The Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 CLERMONT, Fla. – IUP softball has had a successful opening two days at The Spring Games in Florida, tallying wins over Philadelphia, Concord, and Charleston on Monday and Tuesday.

A game against a fourth opponent, Drury, was canceled due to rain on the opening day.

The Crimson Hawks (5-2) defeated Philly U by a score of 3-0 on Monday. All of the scoring came in the third inning, starting with an RBI single by Megan Little (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) that scored Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield). Hannah Mecer followed that with a two-out double that scored Little and Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights).

Mercer finished the game 2-for-3 with that double and two RBIs. Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) picked up the win in the circle, going all seven in the shutout. She struck out seven batters while giving up just two hits.

On Tuesday, IUP opened with a 7-3 victory over Concord. The Crimson Hawks started the scoring early with three in the top of the first, getting RBI base hits from Ashley Smith (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central) and Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona).

Parrish knocked in IUP's fourth run in the third inning on sacrifice fly to center, bringing Mercer across the plate. The Crimson Hawks brought three more runs across, with RBI hits coming from Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School), Goetz and Little.

Macy Mularski (Irwin, Pa./Yough High School) earned the win, scattering eight hits in the full seven innings while giving up just two earned runs.

The Crimson Hawks followed that with a 5-4 back-and-forth win over Charleston. Parrish got things going in the bottom of the second with an RBI double, and later scored herself as IUP pulled off a double steal with Laura Cotter (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny).

Each team traded leads in the third and fourth innings, but IUP took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Parrish led off with another double, later scoring on a single from Beers. She later scored on a Charleston error.

Again Charleston responded and tied things up in the fifth, but the Crimson Hawks scored the eventual winning run in the bottom half when Kassie Kesneck () beat out a throw home after a ground ball from Parrish.

Zola earned her second win in Florida, giving up five hits while striking out three. Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, Ind./Cathedral) picked up the save, giving up just one hit and struck out one in the final two innings.
