No. 35 IUP Women’s Tennis picks up pair of road wins on Saturday

INDIANA, Pa. – 35th-ranked IUP women's tennis took to the road on Saturday, winning two matches in two different states and dropping just two points along the way. The Crimson Hawks defeated Chestnut Hill 9-0 in Philadelphia in the afternoon and Goldey-Beacom 7-2 late in Elkton, Md.
 
IUP cruised in its win over Chestnut Hill, with two doubles wins coming back scores of 8-0, while posting five 6-0, 6-0 singles victories.
 
The Crimson Hawks handed Delaware-based Goldey-Beacom its first loss of the year, defeating the third-ranked team in the East Region on indoor courts in Maryland.
 
The wins were the second and third straight for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 8-4 overall.
 
IUP 9, Chestnut Hill 0
Playing at No. 1 singles, Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) had the biggest test from CHC, winning a thrilling three-setter over Laure-Anne Josso 6-1, 3-6, 10-8. Josso is the only regionally-ranked player for CHC, sitting at No. 8 in the East.

Petercakova also paired with Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) for victory at the No. 1 doubles spot, as the 16th-ranked team in the nation defeated Josso and Louise Charley 8-4.
 
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) at No. 2, and Katya Minchenkova (Mytishchi, Russia/Secondary School No.12) and Mariana Valenzuela (Colombia/George Berkeley School) at No. 3 both earned 8-0 doubles victories. In singles, von Agris Gonzalez, Wood, Minchenkova, and Valenzuela all won 6-0, 6-0.
 
IUP 7, Goldey-Beacom 2
The Crimson Hawks received more competition in their match with GBC, but still easily defeated the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) champions. IUP owned doubles, with Gonzalez and Wood starting things off with an 8-1 win. Minchenkova played with Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset, U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) in the nightcap, earning an 8-2 victory, while Petercakova and von Agris won 8-3.
 
GBC's top doubles team of Francesca Beg and Nine Sengl are 10th in the East Region. The only other ranked player for GBC is Anna Hortelano Pey (15th), who defeated Petercakova 6-4, 6-2 in singles play.
 
Butland had the most thrilling singles win of the night, winning 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 in the super-breaker over Manuela Cornejo at No. 6.
 
Up next
The Crimson Hawks will play four matches in a six-day span this week, starting with PSAC-opponents Clarion and Edinboro on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
