No. 35 IUP Women’s Tennis picks up non-conference win over No. 48 Charleston

INDIANA, Pa. – The 35th-ranked Crimson Hawks rebounded from their Mercyhurst loss with an 8-1 home victory over 48th-ranked Charleston on Sunday at the Maple Street Courts.
 
IUP improved to 13-5 overall with the victory, its second win over a top 50 team in the last four matches. Charleston fell to 18-3 overall with the loss.
 
Crimson Hawks cruise in doubles play
The 16th-ranked team of Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) opened the day with a dominating 8-0 victory over Charleston's No. 1 team.
 
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset, U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and Katya Minchenkova (Mytishchi, Russia/Secondary School No.12) followed with a nearly equally dominant performance with an 8-1 win at No. 3, while Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) and Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) closed out doubles with an 8-3 win at No. 2.
 
IUP tallies five singles wins
All five of the Crimson Hawks singles victories were two-setters, including an opening 6-0, 6-1 win by Minchenkova at No. 4.
 
Mariana Valenzuela (Colombia/George Berkeley School) followed with another 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6, and Gonzalez made it a 6-0 IUP lead with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
 
Butland had a 6-2. 6-0 win at No. 5 before Petercakova went three sets with Charleston's top player Kristine Gegeshidze, before eventually falling 6-1, 1-6, 10-5. Von Agris finished things off with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Elise Edwards at two.
 
Charleston rankings
In addition to Charleston's No. 48 team ranking, the Golden Eagles are third in the Atlantic Region. Gegeshidze is ranked second in the region in singles, while Edwards is 17th in the region.
 
Up next
The Crimson Hawks travel to face California (4-6, 2-2 PSAC West) on Tuesday afternoon. The Vulcans have gone from perennial PSAC champions and the best team in the Atlantic to the seventh-ranked team in the region.
