MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The early season win streak came to an end for the IUP women's tennis team as the Crimson Hawks fell to Carnegie Mellon 7-2 at The Club Sport and Life in Monroeville Sunday afternoon. Carnegie Mellon is the 10th-ranked team in Division III.
The Crimson Hawks are now 4-1 overall, including 3-1 in the spring season's first two weekends.
Both of IUP's wins came in the top half of singles play, with
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and
Katya Minchenkova (Mytishchi, Russia/Secondary School No.12) taking victories at the second and third sports, respectively. Von Agris picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win while Minchenkova won 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
Von Agris remained undefeated this spring at 5-0, improving to 11-3 overall. Minchenkova is now 3-1 in duals at the third singles spot.
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) went the distance at the first spot, falling to CMU's top player Vinaya Rao 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3) in a tie break after three sets.
CMU (7-1) opened with three wins in doubles play.
Nicole Beidacki (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Colegio Sao Judas Tadeu) and Minchenkova fell 8-3 in the second spot,
Julia Newman (Tauranga, New Zealand/Tauranga Girls' College) and
Mariana Valenzuela (Bogotá, Colombia/George Berkeley School) 8-3 at three, and Petercakova and von Agris 9-7 in the first spot.

This was the final match near home for the Crimson Hawks before they head south on their annual spring break trip. IUP is currently scheduled to play four matches in Hilton Head, S.C. March 11-15.
