IUP Softball opens 2018 with a Friday split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. – Freshman Renee Wall (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) hit a home run and drove in three runs in her collegiate debut as the IUP softball team opened its 2018 season with a 10-1 win over Salem International Friday afternoon. The Crimson Hawks also lost to Shepherd 5-4 in eight innings later in the day.

The season officially opened with a double to center by Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School), who later opened the scoring on a wild pitch. Wall blasted a two-run homer as the Crimson Hawks took a 3-0 lead after one.

They scored seven runs in the fourth, with Megan Little (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) bookending the inning with a pair of hits. Sara Hull (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) drove in the first run as pinch runner Olivia Gregorich (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) scored. Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield), Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona), Brooklyn Kotula (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge), and Wall tallied four straight RBI base hits as the Crimson Hawks opened the year with a five-inning win.

Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) started and went all five innings in the circle, scattering six hits with four strikeouts and one earned run. Wall finished 2-3 with that two-run homer and three RBI.

In game two, IUP got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Each of the first four batters reached base, with Wall drawing a walk while Bryanna Lonick (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) drove in another with a sacrifice fly.

Shepherd took one-run leads in the third and fifth, with IUP coming back to tie the game each time with RBIs by Hull and Wall. After going to extra innings tied at 4-4, Shepherd scored on a sacrifice fly to take the lead in the eighth.

Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) took the loss, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts. She gave up seven hits with just two earned runs.
