IUP Softball defeats Edinboro 5-2 in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 CLERMONT, Fla. – Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) struck out eight in a complete game performance as the Crimson Hawks defeated Edinboro 5-2 Thursday afternoon.
 
Zola scattered five hits over her seven innings, walking two and giving up a pair of earned runs in the win.
 
The game was scoreless until the third when Edinboro loaded the bases with no outs. Zola buckled down and got the next three batters out, with just one run crossing on an infield ground out.
 
The Crimson Hawks too the lead in the top of the fourth, starting with a Renee Wall (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) sacrifice fly to center, scoring Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield). Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona) followed that with an RBI single to score Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) as IUP took a 2-1 lead.
 
IUP finished its scoring in the fifth with three runs, including an RBI single by Beers and a two-run double off the bat of Wall. Edinboro answered with one run in the bottom half, but then stranded one runner in each of the next three innings as Zola shut them out the rest of the way.
 
Other games
Earlier in the day, the Crimson Hawks fell to West Virginia Tech by a score of 3-0. Base hits came from Parrish, Kassie Kesneck (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) and Alaina Laverick (Clymer, Pa./Penns Manor). Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) took the loss giving up three runs – two earned – on seven hits in six innings.
 
On Wednesday, IUP dropped a 1-0 decision to Kutztown as the Golden Bears scored the winning run on a one-out sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning. Each team managed five hits, with Beers, Montgomery, Wall, Parrish and Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) collecting singles for IUP. Zola went all seven innings, striking out four while walking three and giving up the one unearned run.
 
Up next
The Crimson Hawks take a 3-6 record into their final two days in Florida. They're scheduled to play West Chester Friday morning at 8 a.m. and will play a pair of games with Northwestern Ohio Saturday afternoon.
