IUP Women’s Tennis blanks Mercyhurst for second straight PSAC Championship

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The IUP women's tennis team became back-to-back Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Champions with a 5-0 win over rival Mercyhurst Saturday afternoon at the Burt Reese Tennis Center at Bloomsburg University.
 
Senior Luise von Agris wrapped up the championship for the Crimson Hawks with a 6-4, 7-6 win at the second singles spot. She was named the PSAC Tournament MVP for her performance during the week, going a combined 3-0 in matched against West Chester and Mercyhurst.

RESULTS
 
This is the second straight year that IUP has defeated Mercyhurst in the conference championship match. It's the program's second ever PSAC title after defeating the Lakers 5-2 last April in Bloomsburg. It also marked the eighth straight year the Crimson Hawks have played for the conference title.
 
The Crimson Hawks improved to 19-5 overall with the victory, posting their second straight shutout win in the conference tournament. They defeated West Chester 5-0 in Friday's semifinals.
 
The loss for Mercyhurst was just its second of the season, falling to 22-2 overall. Both losses came to IUP by a combined score of 12-2.
 
The Crimson Hawks took all three doubles matches by a combined score 24-11.
 
Jarka Petercakova and von Agris dominated at one with an 8-3 victory. Julia Newman and Mariana Valenzuela won by a score of 8-2 at three, and Katya Minchenkova and Nicole Beidacki rallied for an 8-6 victory at two.
 
IUP made it a 4-0 lead when Beidacki picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at four.
 
The two victories Saturday from von Agris gave her a 55-12 overall record this year, with 26 singles wins and 29 doubles wins. The 55 wins are a single season school record.
 
The Crimson Hawks are now 17-6 in PSAC tournament matches since 2011.
                                                                
Up next
The NCAA will release its 48-team Division II Championship field Tuesday, April 24. The Crimson Hawks entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region heading into the weekend.
