INDIANA, Pa. –
Julia Newman tallied a top-10 regional singles victory but the Crimson Hawks couldn't get past Charleston in a 5-2 loss Saturday at the Maple Street Courts.
Newman defeated Katie Swann, the Atlantic Region's seventh-ranked player, by a score of 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles spot.
It was one of two singles wins for the Crimson Hawks, with
Maria Magraner defeating Mathilde Simon 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5.
The undermanned Crimson Hawks gave up a win to Charleston (18-4), arguably the best team in the region, at the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles spots.
With the loss IUP fell to 9-11 overall on the season.
PSAC championships
During the weekend, the Crimson Hawks clinched their ninth straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament berth.
It's one of three spots in the PSAC Western Division with seeding yet to be determined heading into the final week of the regular season. Slippery Rock currently leads the division at 4-0 while Mercyhurst and the Crimson Hawks are tied at 4-1.

The Crimson Hawks will square off with Slippery Rock Monday in a match that was originally scheduled for March 30 but was postponed due to weather.
