Carr and Jones claim PSAC titles as Crimson Hawks wrap up Championships

EDINBORO, PA. – The IUP men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up their efforts at the 2020 PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday in Edinboro, Pa. The men's track and field team ended the weekend in fifth place overall, while the women's team earned 12th place for their efforts.
 
Meet Notes
>> The fifth place finish secured by the IUP men's track and field team is tied for the second best finish for the team at the Indoor Championships in the past nine years.
>> The IUP men's track and field team has earned 60 points over the two days of competition. That is the fourth highest points tally achieved by the men's team in the past nine seasons.
>> The IUP women's track and field team picked up 22 points at the championships. The team's 12th place finish improves by one spot over their result at the 2019 PSAC Indoor Championships, and is tied for the third best finish for the team in the past seven seasons.
>> The 22 points claimed by the IUP women's track and field team is tied for the second most points earned in the conference championship meet in the past six years.
>> The Crimson Hawks claimed eight top eight finishes on Saturday, including two gold medals.

Top Performers
>> After finishing first in the men's 60 meter dash preliminaries and setting a meet and facility record with a time of 6.78 seconds on Saturday, Dre Carr went out and smashed his own record on Sunday en route to claiming a PSAC Championship in the men's 60 meter dash. Carr won the race with a time of 6.72 seconds to earn his first PSAC title. Carr set a new PSAC Championship Meet record with his time, and was just .01 seconds off of tying his own school record in the event.
>> On the other end of the distance spectrum, the men's 3,000 meter race proved to be a very productive event for the Crimson Hawks. IUP managed to take three of the top eight spots in the race, highlighted by Sam Lenze's fourth place finish. Lenze finished first for IUP with a time of 8:54.99, just narrowly missing out on setting a new personal best time in the race. Coming in six and seventh overall were teammates Noah Mandel and Nathan Skodi. Mandel crossed the finish line with a time of 8:57.77 to claim sixth, while Skodi was just seconds behind him in seventh place at 8:59.35. Both Mandel and Skodi set new personal records in the event with their times.
>> The Crimson Hawks also managed to pick up multiple medal spots in the men's high jump. Christian Jones successfully defending his crown as the PSAC's high jump champion, winning the event with a height of 2.01 meters. Jones was joined on the podium by teammate Juan Mato-Segura who tied his personal best height of 1.98 meters on Sunday to claim second place. Jayden Thomas also cleared 1.98 meters to finish fourth via a tie-breaker. Thomas bested his previous top mark in the event of 1.94 meters with his performance on Sunday.
>> On the women's side of the competition, Nickeela Austin went two-for-two in jumping events, earning a silver medal in the women's triple jump on Sunday, to go along with her second place finish in the long jump the day before. Austin had a best jump of 11.60 meters in the finals of the event to claim second place overall for IUP, and to push her personal points tally at the championships to 16.

NCAA Qualifiers
>> After earning an NCAA provisional mark in the men's 60 meter dash on Saturday, Carr's time of 6.72 seconds in the finals of the 60 meter dash on Sunday helped him to earn an NCAA automatic qualifying mark.

>> Qualifying athletes will now await word from the NCAA on possible selection to the Division II Championships March 13-4 in Birmingham, Alabama.
