Crimson Hawks third after first day of PSAC Championships

HERSHEY, Pa. - The IUP men's golf team sits eight strokes back after the opening round of the 2021 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at Hershey Country Club. 

The Crimson Hawks shot an 8-over 292 on the first 18 holes and sit behind overall leader Pitt-Johnstown (284) and second place Gannon (289). IUP has a five-stroke lead over fourth place Mercyhurst (297) and lead Shepherd and Mercyhurst (299) by seven strokes. 

IUP posted the most birdies of any team on Friday with 15 as Nicholas Ward and Shaun Fedor sunk four apiece. The Hawks also excelled on par 5s with an average score of 4.73, the best score in the 10-team championship. 

The Hawks have three players in the top-10 after the opening round, with freshman Isaiah Swan shooting an even-par 71 to sit in a tie for fourth overall. Junior Shaun Fedor is tied for sixth to 1-over 72 and senior Jack Buccigoss is tied for ninth with a 2-over 73. Also counting into IUPs four-man score was Ward, who's tied for 29th with a 5-over 76. Junior Richie Kline is tied for 36th with a 7-over 78. 

Gannon's Abe Holmes and UPJs Mario Battaglia are tied at the top with a 2-under 69. 

IUP will be part of the third wave of teams to tee off in Saturday's second round, starting at 11:40 a.m.
