No. 6 Crimson Hawks continue road swing with two games over three days

INDIANA, Pa. - The No. 6-ranked IUP men's basketball team (14-1, 8-1 PSAC) has two road games in the next three days on tap as they head to Clarion (6-7, 2-6 PSAC) Saturday and face Pitt-Johnstown (12-3, 8-1 PSAC) Monday night. The Crimson Hawks are undefeated on the road this season and have played four straight games away from home since the start of January. Clarion has lost three straight and is coming off a 75-67 home loss to Cal U. The Mountain Cats are winners of five straight and defeated Mansfield 92-73 on the road this week.

TIPOFF NOTES
>> The Crimson Hawks jumped out to a 16-0 lead at Seton Hill and cruised to a 100-60 victory Wednesday. 
>> IUP made a season-high 18 3-pointers, shot 56 pct. from the field, and had a season-low 9 turnovers.
>> It was IUP's fourth 100-point game of the year, including its second against a conference opponent.
>> The Crimson Hawks are now 55-3 in January over the last six seasons, including a 30-2 mark on the road.
>> Jr. G Armoni Foster had 27 points and 12 assists, So. F Ethan Porterfield tied a career-high with 23 points, and Fr. G Dallis Dillard came off the bench to score a season-high 19 points and did not miss a shot.
>> It was Foster's fifth straight 20-point game (23.2 PPG) and fifth double-double of the season.
>> IUP is one of 10 Division II teams with 1 or fewer losses this season. 
>> IUP HC Joe Lombardi is 25-4 lifetime against Clarion, including 20 straight victories dating back to 2010-11. 
>> The Hawks have won 10 straight in Clarion by 17.3 points, including a 101-49 win in the 2019-20 season.
>> Lombardi has a 17-3 record against Pitt-Johnstown, including a 16-1 mark since they joined the PSAC in 2013.
>> The Hawks are 62-5 (.924) in PSAC West games since the 2016-17 season. That record includes a 30-2 mark at home and 32-3 away. IUP is 3-0 against divisional teams this year.
>> IUP is 7-0 on the road this year with a scoring margin of +15.0. Foster is averaging 22.1 PPG away from home.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES
>> Clarion is 6-7 overall and is 8th in the PSAC West standings with a 2-6 conference record.
>> The Golden Eagles are 4-2 at home this season with losses to Shippensburg (70-61) and Cal U (75-67).
>> CU is averaging 9.8 made 3FGs over its last five games, hitting 14 against Lock Haven and 12 against Mansfield.
>> Clarion is 0-3 against the PSAC West (Mercyhurst, UPJ, Cal U) and is averaging 68.3 PPG. 

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN CATS
>> Pitt-Johnstown enters the weekend 12-3 overall and tied with IUP for 1st in the division at 8-1. 
>> UPJ is 6th in this week's D2SIDA Atlantic Region poll.
>> The Mountain Cats have won five straight, averaging 88.4 PPG with three 90-point games during that span.
>> UPJ is 6th in Division II with a 52.1 FG%.

IUP IN THE POLLS
>> The Hawks are No. 6 in the NABC Coaches' poll and No. 4 in the D2SIDA Media poll this week. 
>> IUP has been inside the top-10 of the media poll each week this year, including a four-week stretch at No. 3. 
>> This is the eighth straight week the Hawks are ranked in the top-10 of both polls.
>> It's the 42nd time in the last 44 polls the Hawks have been eligible for that they rank in the top-10, dating back to the 2019-20 preseason poll. 
>> IUP spent the entire 2018-19 season in the top-5 of the media poll and all of 2019-20 in the top-10.

IUP HAD 9-0 START TO THE SEASON
>> The Crimson Hawks won their first five non-conference games and four straight to open the PSAC slate.
>> It was the fifth time since the 2009-10 season that IUP has opened a season with at least 9 straight wins. 
>> IUP's best start under Lombardi was 14-0 to open the 2017-18 and 2013-14 seasons.
>> IUP started the 2019-20 season 9-0 and the 2009-10 season 11-0.

HAWKS OFFENSE PROVIDES FIREWORKS
>> IUP is 1st in the PSAC and is 13th in DII at 87.5 PPG. 
>> The Hawks have scored at least 81 points 11 times in 15 games this season.
>> They have scored 100+ points four times and have five more 90-point efforts. 
>> The 107 points against Pitt-Greensburg is a season-high. IUP also scored 106 against Le Moyone, 103 at West Chester, and 100 at Seton Hill. 
>> Five times this year at least five Crimson Hawks have scored in double-figures. 
>> Four of IUP's starters are averaging double-figures.

KNOCKING DOWN THE "3"
>> IUP leads the PSAC with 9.5 made 3FGs per game.
>> IUP's 37.0 3FG% is 3rd in the conference.

IUP SUCCESSFUL AT HOME

>> The lone loss came to Shippensburg on Dec. 19, ending IUP's 24-game home win streak. 
>> IUP's longest home win streak during the Lombardi Era is 30 straight victories. That streak ran from the 2008-09 to the 2010-11 seasons.
>> IUP is 44-3 (.936) at home since 2018-19 and 130-17 (.884) since the 2012-13 season. 
>> IUP has two undefeated home seasons under Lombardi - 18-0 in 2009-10 and 16-0 in 2019-20. 

FOSTER GETTING IT DONE ALL OVER THE COURT
>> Jr. G Armoni Foster is averaging 20.3 PPG, 6.5 RPG and 6.5 APG, to go along with 20 steals and 12 blocks.
>> He ranks 2nd in the PSAC in scoring, 2nd in assists, and 22nd in rebounding.
>> Foster was named to the Bevo Francis Award Watch List (top 100) on Jan. 15. The award recognizes the top players in NCAA Division II, III, the NAIA and JC.
>> Foster earned back-to-back PSAC West Athlete of the Week honors (Nov. 29, Dec. 6).
>> He's the only Division II player - and one of two in all of the NCAA - with two triple-doubles this year.
>> Foster tallied his latest triple-double with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Pitt-Greensburg.
>> He also had 22 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds against Virginia State. 
>> Foster also has five double-doubles this year, his latest coming in the win at Seton Hill - 27 points, 12 assists.
>> Foster has eight 20-point performances this season, tying a career-high with 33 at West Chester.
>> Foster went over 1,000 career points during the win at Kutztown. He's currently 24th in IUP history with 1,206 points (Yancey Taylor, 23rd, 1,257). 

PORTERFIELD IS MR. INSIDE AND MR. OUTSIDE
>> So. F Ethan Porterfield is averaging 17.3 PPG and 7.1 RPG, has 35 3-pointers and 23 blocks.
>> He was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on Dec. 20 (11.0 RPG, 5 blocks, 3 steals).
>> He's 3rd in the PSAC with a 60.5 FG% (98-162).
>> He leads the PSAC with a 54.7 3FG% (35-64).
>> Porterfield's 1.5 blocks per game is 4th in the PSAC.
>> He had back-to-back double-doubles against Shepherd (16 pts, 14 reb) and Shippensburg (19 pts, 12 reb).
>> He has a career-high 23 points three times this season - vs. Millersville, at Cal U, at Seton Hill.
>> He's averaging 20.8 PPG over the last four games.

MORRIS IS A TWO-WAY POINT GUARD
>> Jr. G Dave Morris is averaging 12.0 PPG and is 2nd on the team with 57 assists.
>> His 4.1 APG ranks 10th in the PSAC. 
>> Morris has a season-high 8 assists in a game twice - at West Chester, vs. Shepherd.
>> Morris leads the PSAC and ranks 5th in Division II with 3.1 steals per game. His 44 steals is 5th in DII.
>> He has nine games of 3+ steals this year, tying a career-high with 6 against Concord and Lock Haven.
>> Morris is averaging 15.7 PPG over the last six, including five double-figure games.

DEMOGERONTAS A DOUBLE-DOUBLE THREAT
>> 5th yr. F Tommy Demogerontas is averaging 12.8 PPG and a team-best 7.9 RPG this year.
>> He posted his 3rd double-double of the year with 15 points and 12 boards against Millersville. 
>> He has five double-doubles in 21 games at IUP.
>> He is 9th in the PSAC with a 52.9 FG%.
>> Demogerontas had a career game with highs of 23 points and 15 rebounds at Bowie State.

JONES WILL NOT RETURN IN 2021-22
>> Sr. G Shawndale Jones will miss the remainder of the 2021-22 season after suffering an injury at West Chester.
>> At the time of his injury, Jones led the PSAC and ranked 6th in Division II with 25.0 PPG. 
>> He had five 20-point games, including a career-high 37 points at Bowie State.
>> He's one of four IUP players this century to score at least 37 points in a game. 
>> He was also 9th in the PSAC with a 57.4 FG%, 4th with an 86.8 FT%, and 4th with 33 free throws made. 

POLCE STEPPING INTO STARTING 5
>> Fr. G Kyle Polce took Jones' spot in the lineup and has nine starts this season.
>> He's averaging 4.0 PPG and 3.4 RPG with 11 assists since taking over for Jones.
>> Polce has a 4.6-1 assist-turnover ratio this season.

DEPTH IN THE POST
>> Fr. F Tomiwa Sulaiman is averaging 3.6 PPG and 4.1 RPG with 10 blocks and 10 steals this season.
>> He earned his first career start at Seton Hill, going for 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks.
>> He's averaging 5.5 PPG and 4.5 RPG with a 68.1 FG% (15-22) over his last six games.
