COMING UP
IUP vs. Walsh
Thursday, November 16 – 8:00 p.m. -- KCAC – Indiana, Pa.
IUP NEWS AND NOTES
- Coming off a fourth consecutive conference championship and a 32-2 mark a season ago, the preseason-ranked IUP men's basketball programs lifts the lid on the 2023-24 season with the Hilton Garden Inn Tip-Off Classic from the KCAC.
- Head coach Joe Lombardi (400-108) is set for his 18th season at the helm, welcoming in seven newcomers for the Hawks this season. IUP is tasked with replacing three All-PSAC West First Team selections from a season ago.
- IUP consistently hosts a season-opening tournament dating back to 2014. IUP is 12-2 in those tournament games during that span, winning the first game in each of the seven tournaments.
- IUP posted its fifth 30-win season since 2009-10 a season ago, the most of any team in the PSAC.
- One of the top defensive teams in the nation of late, IUP limited its opponents to under 60 points per game last season. The Hawks have finished inside the top 10 nationally in scoring defense each of the last three full playing seasons.
- Headlining the returners for IUP this season is inside/outside threat Ethan Porterfield. He took his game up a notch in the conference tournament last year, hampered throughout the season, and enters his senior season with 1,334 points, 628 rebounds, 166 assists, 137 blocks and 83 steals through 100 games.
- Porterfield is a 42.3% career shooter from beyond the arc, providing a dynamic offensive skillset as a 6'8" forward.
- Dallis Dillard returns as an elite defender for IUP as a junior, while Jaylen Stewart also provides some starting experience from a season ago, coming on as the season progressed and into the playoffs.
- IUP will also look for contributions from redshirt-freshman forward Dolan Waldo, along with the energizing Damir Brooks in the low block.
- Among the newcomers, Garvin Clarke (Akron) and Josh Petteno (Young Harris) should slot right into the IUP lineup with previous collegiate playing experience. The duo is part of seven total newcomers for IUP in 2023-24.
- Despite an uptick in talent across the PSAC West heading into 2023-24, the IUP men were picked as the division favorites for the eighth consecutive year. The Hawks have captured seven consecutive PSAC regular season titles.
CONCORD AT A GLANCE
- Needing to replace a pair of 1,000-point scorers, head coach Todd May (8th season) is closing in on 100 career wins at Concord.
- Concord blocked 139 shots last season, a program record.
- Returning All-MEC selection JJ Harper (14.7 PPG in 2022-23) and fifth-year forward Jevon Laidler (11.5 PPG in 2022-23) will be counted on over the opening weekend and throughout the season for the Mountain Lions.
NOTRE DAME (OHIO) AT A GLANCE
- Fifth-year head coach Mark Richmond will also be looking to replace some major production from last season, losing his top two scorers and leading rebounder.
- The Falcons were tabbed seventh in the MEC Preseason Poll, one spot behind Concord in sixth.
- Jamarr Talbert Jr. saw playing times in all 30 games last season for NDC, while Andre Harris added averages of 10.1 points and a team-high 7.1 rebounds a season ago.
SERIES HISTORY
- IUP has won all six previous meetings with Concord. The Hawks have gone 3-0 against the Mountain Lions at home since 2018-19, also recording a 77-60 victory in the 2022-23 season opener (at Clarion).
- IUP won its only matchup with Notre Dame (Ohio), 87-70, back on November 16, 2013. Mathis Keita led the way for IUP with 25 points with Marcel Souberbielle notching 21 points of his own.
