WARREN, Ohio – IUP men's golf collectively shook off a rocky start to the round, finishing the opening round tied for 11th on Monday afternoon at Avalon Lakes.
IUP was part of the last pairing for round one, entering Tuesday in a tie with Lee and Simon Fraser for 11th place. The Crimson Hawks are just four shots from eighth overall and the eventual cut line following 54 holes of action.
Missouri S&T shot the low round of the day on Monday with a four-under 284 team score. Grand Valley State, Oklahoma Christian and Barry were also under par as a team to round out the top four spots overall.
Shaun Fedor paced the IUP lineup, carding a one-under 71 on the day. Fedor was outstanding during the round particularly on the back nine, shooting one under over the final stretch. He carded four birdies during the round, coming at three, five, 11 and 15 to enter the second round tied for 14th individually.
Alex Swinnerton posted a two-over 74 for IUP and is tied for 40th. Swinnerton posted four birdies overall with two coming on the back nine.
Guillermo Salazar concluded the first round tied for 60th following a four-over 76, mixing two birdies around four bogeys over the last six holes of the round.
John Olsen also notched a 76 on the day, playing an even back nine.
Jackson Buccigross rounded out the IUP lineup with an 82 for the Crimson Hawks.
The 18th hole played as the toughest on the course after the first round with just one birdie across the tournament. The par four had a scoring average of 4.83 and 55 total bogeys across the round.
