TIPOFF NEWS AND NOTES
  • IUP is looking to adjust going into the new year, working players into different roles for 2024 in an up and down season. Looking to replace three All-PSAC First Team performers from last season, the Crimson Hawks will now be without starters Dallis Dillard and Garvin Clarke.
  • IUP dropped just its fourth regular season conference game since 2021-22 in a 65-48 setback to East Stroudsburg last time out on December 30. It marked ESU's first victory against IUP inside Koehler Fieldhouse since January 2013 and the Hawks' lowest scoring output in a game since January 2012.
  • Putting a somewhat patchwork lineup on the floor with limited practice time following the holiday, Bryce Radford and Josh Petteno stepped into the starting five against the Warriors. It marked Radford's official return to the IUP roster as a midyear addition, seeing his first action as a Crimson Hawk since March 2022 at the NCAA DII Final Four against Augusta.
  • IUP ranks 12th in NCAA DII in rebounding average (41.6) and ninth nationally in offensive rebounding average (14.4).
  • IUP HC Joe Lombardi boasts a 2-0 record against Shepherd, most recently a 65-46 home win in December 2021 against the Rams at the KCAC. Ethan Porterfield logged a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds in that victory.
  • Porterfield continues his climb up the IUP record book in multiple categories following his 15th career double-double on December 30 against ESU. He enters the game 11th in program history with 1,538 career points, just seven shy of surpassing Armoni Foster (1,544) and moving into the top 10 on the school's all-time scoring list.
  • Porterfield and Jaylen Stewart each played at least 36 minutes against East Stroudsburg. Off the bench, Jordan Lambert, Dolan Waldo and KJ Rhodes spelled Petteno, Damir Brooks and Radford.
  • The Hawks will look to solidify its shooting from beyond the arc heading into 2024. IUP is second in the league in three-point attempts/game (25.3) but second worst in three-point percentage (.291) heading into Wednesday's contest.
  • IUP is second in the PSAC in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to a 41.6% clip for the season.

SHEPHERD AT A GLANCE
  • Shepherd enters the contest following consecutive wins against Erie County schools, most recently a 61-57 home triumph against Mercyhurst on December 30. Marcus Banks logged a game-high 15 points with four rebounds in the victory.
  • The Rams rank ninth in NCAA DII in scoring defense (63.2), also third the league in field goal percentage defense (42.4).
  • Shepherd boasts several capable scoring options with four players averaging double figures, led by Daniel McClain-Corley's 14.7 points/game.

  • Along the interior, Brooks has seen an increase in minutes since becoming part of the starting lineup, grabbing five or more rebounds in six consecutive contests.

  • Coaching his 18th season at the helm of the Crimson Hawks, Lombardi is the program's all-time leader in wins (407-112) with 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, seven PSAC tournament titles (2010, 2011, 2013, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023), three Atlantic Region Championships (2010, 2015, 2022) and two Division II National Championship Game appearances (2010, 2015).
