OAKTIE, S.C. – The IUP men's golf team collectively shot a phenomenal second round, slotting fifth in the team standings after the opening 36 holes of the South Carolina Beaufort Oldfield Classic on Monday.
The Crimson Hawks have three players among the top 20 individually, shooting a 293 team score in the second round at the par-72 Oldfield Golf Club. Making its second trip to the Carolinas in as many weeks, the Crimson Hawks carded 28 birdies on the day and pace the field in average scoring on par three holes (3.18; +7).
Host USCB leads the field with a 580, six shots ahead of NCAA Division I Drexel (586). With a two-round team score of 595, IUP is six shots back from third-place Truett-McConnell (589).
Shaun Fedor highlighted the day with a rare hole in one during the opening round, coming on the par-three 13th hole (193 yards). The shot came just after a bogey on 12, getting him back to even for the round. He closed the opening round with a birdie, finishing one under on the day with a 71. Tied for 12th overall, Fedor posted a 76 in the second round.
Guillermo Salazar flipped rounds with Fedor, also tied for 12th overall with rounds of 76 and 71. After beginning the round with consecutive bogeys, Salazar settled in in a major way. He played the back nine at a two-under clip with birdies on holes 11 and 17. Salazar was a combined -4 on par five holes on Monday.
Alex Swinnerton slots in a tie for 19th overall after rounds of 76 and 73 on Monday. He also settled in over the back nine in the second round. Hitting the turn at three over, Swinnerton went two under over the final nine holes, playing with great consistency down the stretch.
Aidan LeBlanc overcame a stretch of bogeys in the first round for an impressive 73 (+1) in round two. LeBlanc is tied for 32nd in the individual standings.
Playing as an individual,
Cameron Gerue is tied for 58th overall. Gerue lowered his second round score by six shots, posting a 77 over the second set of 18 holes.
Jon Vinge (individual) finished the day tied for 70th with
John Olsen rounding out the lineup in 72nd.
