IUP Athletics Weekend Overview: April 26-28, 2024

INDIANA, Pa. – With the close of the spring semester and regular season competition rapidly approaching, the battle for playoff positioning is in full swing across the department of athletics at IUP. Here is a snapshot of the weekend ahead.

The IUP baseball team looks to continue a strong stretch of play, entering the weekend's four-game set against Pitt-Johnstown tied for first in the PSAC West. Winners of seven straight games, the Crimson Hawks are receiving votes in the latest ABCA NCAA DII Top 25 and are listed "under consideration" in the initial alphabetical release of the NCAA DII Atlantic Region rankings.  
 
Fresh off a four-game sweep of California (Pa.), IUP grinded through a 16-12 win at Wheeling on April 23. IUP will celebrate Senior Day between games one and two of Friday's doubleheader against Pitt-Johnstown. Among the seniors to be recognized are Blaise Zeiders, Andrew Sicisnki, Zach Miller, Mark Edeburn and Harrison Pontoli.
 
Edeburn is just 7.1 innings shy of becoming the school's all-time leader in innings pitched, while Pontoli is five hits shy of 200 for his career. Ricardo Aponte paces the squad with a .352 batting average and 10 doubles this season.

IUP finishes out the regular season with home doubleheaders on Friday against UPJ and Saturday against first-place Seton Hill. Amanda Fischer will be recognized as part of Senior Day between games on Friday, while Saturday's regular season finale serves as Strikeout for Cancer Day at Podbielski Field.
 
The Crimson Hawks enter one game back of Mercyhurst (13-15 PSAC) from the final playoff spot in the PSAC West. IUP rallied for a 9-8 walk-off victory against California (Pa.) yesterday (April 24) at Podbielski Field. Jordan Sylvia notched the 100th RBI of her collegiate career with the base knock, while Madison Pikula set the program's single season hits record (68).
 
Sylvia (49 RBI) and Jaycee Haidze (48 RBI) are both within striking distance of the IUP single season RBI mark of 53, held by Megan McCormick (2010). As a team, the Hawks are second in the league in batting average at a .333 clip.
 
FOOTBALL

The IUP football program will host the annual spring game on Friday night at Miller Stadium. The game is open to the public with free admission.

IUP is set for its final event ahead of the 2024 PSAC Championships, heading to the Paul Kaiser Classic on Saturday morning. IUP posted 10 event victories last time out at the Mountaineer Classic, headlined by a 3,000m steeple sweep for  Dan Gibney (9:24.53) and Stella Kuntz (12:20.18).
 
Saturday's track action begins with the combined 10K at 10:00 a.m.
 
WOMEN'S LACROSSE (7-7, 6-3 PSAC)

Controlling their own destiny, the IUP women's lacrosse program starts a crucial three-game stretch to wrap up the regular season this weekend. IUP is one game out of second place in the division standings, with all three regular season matchup against the top three schools in the PSAC West (Slippery Rock, Seton Hill, Lock Haven).
 
IUP fell in overtime to Slippery Rock, 12-11, back on March 30 at Miller Stadium. Chantal Jimenez leads the team with 39 goals, 54 points and 75 draw controls. Her 337 draw controls are eight shy of tying the school's all-time mark and nine from the school record.
 
Sarah Reustle has 92 career goals and 199 career draw controls for the Hawks, particularly active over the last two games with eight points, three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Sami Shutt is four ground balls shy of 100 as the veteran Crimson Hawks make a push towards the playoffs.
