LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference recognized 10 student-athletes, five men and five women, as the top scholar-athletes in their respective sports for the fall season. Indiana University of Pennsylvania had two honorees: women's soccer forward Elle Smith and cross-country senior Mike Formica. The recipients were nominated and voted on by the conference's athletic communications professionals.
Formica had a record-setting fall while competing at the PSAC Championship. He set course records as well as IUP program records in the 10-kilometer and 8-kilometer events, marking one of the best seasons in IUP history. A psychology major, Formica earned a 3.51 grade-point average in the classroom and became the fourth men's cross-country runner from IUP to receive the PSAC Top-10 scholar-athlete honor.
Smith also had a standout fall semester, scoring 20 goals to help the IUP women's soccer team tie for the most in Division II. Her eight game-winning goals ranked second nationally, and her 47 points led the country. A natural science major, Smith earned a 3.85 GPA and became the second women's soccer player from IUP to earn the award.
